Text Quotes
I hope to encourage more children to discover and love reading, but I want to focus particularly on the appreciation of picture books…. Picture books are for everybody at any age, not books to be left behind as we grow older. The best ones leave a tantalising gap between the pictures and the words, a gap that is filled by the reader’s imagination, adding so much to the excitement of reading a book  (Books Quotes) People do amazing things for love. Books are full of wonderful stories about this kind of stuff, and stories aren’t just fantasies, you know. They’re so much a part of the people who write them that they practically teach their readers invaluable lessons about life  (Books Quotes) As with men, it has always seemed to me that books have their own peculiar destinies. They go towards the people who are waiting for them and reach them at the right moment. They are made of living material and continue to cast light through the darkness long after the death of their authors  (Books Quotes) Writing is for stories to be read, books to be published, poems to be recited, plays to be acted, songs to be sung, newspapers to be shared, letters to be mailed, jokes to be told, notes to be passed, recipes to be cooked, messages to be exchanged, memos to be circulated, announcements to be posted, bills to be collected, posters to be displayed and diaries to be concealed. Writing is for ideas, action, reflection, and experience. It is not for having your ignorance exposed, your sensitivity destroyed, or your ability assessed  (Books Quotes) There is something about libraries, old libraries, that makes them seem almost sacred. There’s a smell of paper and must and binding stuff. It’s like all the books are fighting against decay, against turning into dust, and at the same time fighting for attention  (Books Quotes) Cultivate an appreciation and passion for books. I’m using passion in the fullest sense of the word: a deep, fervent emotion, a state of intense desire; an enthusiastic ardor for something or someone  (Books Quotes) A writing teacher once told me that the most successful movies and books were simple plots about complex characters. You should be able to articulate your concept in a couple of lines  (Books Quotes) Experts generally agree that taking all opportunities to read books and other material aloud to children is the best preparation for their learning to read. The pleasures of being read to are far more likely to strengthen a child’s desire to learn to read than are repetitions of sounds, alphabet drills, and deciphering uninteresting words  (Books Quotes) That’s one of the things books do. They help us talk. But they also give us something we all can talk about when we don’t want to talk about ourselves  (Books Quotes) One of the many things I love about bound books is their sheer physicality. Electronic books live out of sight and out of mind. But printed books have body, presence. Sure, sometimes they’ll elude you by hiding in improbable places... But at other times they’ll confront you, and you’ll literally stumble over some tomes you hadn’t thought about in weeks or years. I often seek electronic books, but they never come after me. They may make me feel, but I can’t feel them. They are all soul with no flesh, no texture, and no weight. They can get in your head but can’t whack you upside it  (Books Quotes) When an editor works with an author, she cannot help seeing into the medicine cabinet of his soul. All the terrible emotions, the desire for vindications, the paranoia, and the projection are bottled in there, along with all the excesses of envy, desire for revenge, all the hypochondriacal responses, rituals, defenses, and the twin obsessions with sex and money. It other words, the stuff of great books  (Books Quotes) That’s the beauty of books. We get to take what we want out of them and it can be different for everyone  (Books Quotes) The truly cultured are capable of owning thousands of unread books without losing their composure or their desire for more  (Books Quotes) Those who aspire to the status of cultured individuals visit bookstores with trepidation, overwhelmed by the immensity of all they have not read. They buy something that theyve been told is good, make an unsuccessful attempt to read it, and when they have accumulated half a dozen unread books, feel so bad that they are afraid to buy more. In contrast, the truly cultured are capable of owning thousands of unread books without losing their composure or their desire for more  (Books Quotes) Everything I know I learned by listening and watching. Nowadays people learn out of books instead. Doctors study what man has learned. I pray to understand what man has forgotten  (Books Quotes) To write? Because all this is going to vanish. The only thing left will be the prose and poems, the books, what is written down. Man was very fortunate to have invented the book. Without it the past would completely vanish, and we would be left with nothing, we would be naked on earth  (Books Quotes) Every morning, after a few sips of coffee and a bit of small talk, each of us retreats with our books, and travels centuries away from this place  (Books Quotes) I have this belief that children become readers before they can read. They become hooked on books because they were read aloud to as a child  (Books Quotes) All that you see was and is for your sake. The numerous books, uncanny markings, and beautiful thoughts are the ghosts of souls who preceded you  (Books Quotes) Books exist for me not as physical entities with pages and binding, but in the province of my mind  (Books Quotes) I’m a library user and I just don’t hoard books. To me, they’re for sharing  (Books Quotes) Books have a vital place in our culture. They are the source of ideas, of stories that engage and stretch the imagination and most importantly, inspire  (Books Quotes) Books are islands in the ocean of time. They are also oases in the deserts of time  (Books Quotes) I can look at my books with pleasure from a distance. Four feet is close enough  (Books Quotes) If a man’s house is full of medicine bottles, we infer the man is an invalid. But if his house is full of books, we conclude he is intelligent  (Books Quotes) We are born to die tomorrow, and yet through books we are able to know events of thousands of years  (Books Quotes) Thank you industrialization. Thank you steel mill. Thank you power station. And thank you chemical processing industry that gave us time to read books  (Books Quotes) Reading good books implants good ideas in the mind, develops good aspirations, and leads to the cultivation of good friends  (Books Quotes) If nobody talks about books, if they are not discussed or somehow contended with, literature ceases to be a conversation, ceases to be dynamic. Most of all, it ceases to be intimate. It degenerates into a monologue or a mutter. An unreviewed book is a struck bell that gives no resonance. Without reviews, literature would be oddly mute in spite of all those words on all those pages of all those books. Reviewing makes of reading a participant sport, not a spectator sport  (Books Quotes) Books are like rocks. You hold one in your hand and look at it in various lights to get a sense of it, and then when you get a good angle, you throw it through a window to see what happens  (Books Quotes)
