Text Quotes
My dad says that when I was two or three I used to go out dressed as a different character every day. I remember thinking it was perfectly normal to wear different coloured shoes and carry a pink umbrella. But now I’ve got a goddaughter of that age; I realise it’s not normal at all  (Character Quotes) I think it’s very important to write a demythologized woman character. My characters are flawed. They are no better than they should be  (Character Quotes) If you can just actually let the character be for a bit, then you get the right sense  (Character Quotes) When you first get out of doing a show for a long time where you played a teenager, casting directors and producers all still look at you as being the character that you played for so long  (Character Quotes) I love singing and I think I have a really nice voice, but I don’t think I have an unbelievable singing voice. I think I have a great character voice  (Character Quotes) Most good fiction also has a character the writer seems to know more deeply than anyone can actually be known in life, but a few unusual writers can make something great without that  (Character Quotes) I just can’t feel lukewarm about a character. I either despise her, admire her, or don’t understand her and want to understand her  (Character Quotes) It’s never been a priority for me to concentrate on the likability of the character  (Character Quotes) I still like the relationship part of any story. You don’t want your character to figure everything out and then at the end of the day, go home and eat soup from a can by herself  (Character Quotes) I believe the most intricate plot won’t matter much to readers if they don’t care about the characters, especially in a series. So I try to focus hard on making each character, whether villain or hero, have an interesting flaw that readers can relate to  (Character Quotes) It may seem unfashionable to say so, but historians should seize the imagination as well as the intellect. History is, in a sense, a story, a narrative of adventure and of vision, of character and of incident. It is also a portrait of the great general drama of the human spirit  (Character Quotes) I never want to play the same character twice. I like to do different roles. I have fun with that  (Character Quotes) A character, their ability or inability to laugh at themselves should always be a very, very conscious choice. It’s a very big key to the nature of a human being  (Character Quotes) I never like to refer back to anything I’ve done when I’m working on a character, even if that character has the same occupation  (Character Quotes) I just think there’s always room for humanity in acting, one can only hope, so when you bring in the whole life of a person that’s playing a character, then surprises happen and are allowed to happen, and so it makes it more interesting  (Character Quotes) You know, it’s scary when you sign onto a pilot of a series because, as much as you want the series to go, you also want it to be a character that you’d be interested in playing for a long time  (Character Quotes) If you’re writing a scene for a character with whom you disagree in every way, you still need to show how that character is absolutely justified in his or her own mind, or the scene will come across as being about the author’s views rather than about the character’s  (Character Quotes) I eat, sleep, and drink my character. It is my fantasy to go to another planet  (Character Quotes) I feel I do my best work when it’s all there on the page, and I feel that the character is very vivid as I read the script and I’m not having to create stuff and trying to cobble together something. If I have to do that, then I don’t entirely trust what I’m doing  (Character Quotes) Technological rationality reveals its political character as it becomes the great vehicle of better domination, creating a truely totalitarian universe in which society and nature, mind and body are kept in a state of permanent mobilization for the defense of this universe  (Character Quotes) Man could escape danger only by renouncing adventure, by abandoning that which has given to the human condition its unique character and genius among the rest of living things  (Character Quotes) Also, in my acting, I feel very much like a storyteller, exploring the flaws of the characters that I interpret. I look for the imperfections, and I love a character that is just so flawed  (Character Quotes) Anyone can die. Rule number one is don’t get too attached to a character, anyone can go  (Character Quotes) I would go into a place that was quiet and isolated and think about how my character would feel in the situation, considering who he was and what he had been through. I would think about that even up to 30 minutes. And when I felt the character was in my body and I had left, I could walk onto set or into rehearsal  (Character Quotes) I always tend to see, right after reading the script, the character and how I want to play it. I guess that’s sort of most of the work, preparing for the role, but almost the creation of the character seems to go on as I read through the script  (Character Quotes) Whichever character I’m using and wherever I am in my mind dictates what kind of story I’m going to tell  (Character Quotes) Character roles only indicate that they’re very different from who you are as a person, and for me, it’s fun hiding behind characters that are so unlike who I am  (Character Quotes) I love ensemble pieces, I love being a part of the entire tapestry of a piece, but I think character actors do have a lot more fun, and there’s a versatility involved that’s challenging and fun, to come up to speed and do what’s required of you  (Character Quotes) To read a character I’m not sympathizing with is generally quite a good, attractive proposition because I’ve got somewhere to go, I’ve got work to do, to try to understand why they behave like they behave, to relate entirely and understand them and to be completely emotionally connected. That is much more fun 99 percent of the time  (Character Quotes) A different script calls for different things. It always takes me a long time to get to know the part, and know the logic behind the words. I have to be with the script for quite a long time before things start to fall into place, before they become part of the character  (Character Quotes)
