Text Quotes
It’s much simpler to be tortured on camera or to be filmed losing your mind. Whereas a script that has characters who are honest, witty and genuine is often much harder to act  (Characters Quotes) I don’t tend to think of the characters I play as losers. I like the struggles that people have, people who are feeling like they don’t fit into society, because I still sort of feel that way  (Characters Quotes) I’m not there to be the token sexy girl. I don’t know that I would ever be able to pull that off. It’s nice that those characters I’ve played feel uncomfortable as well because it’s so much more realistic  (Characters Quotes) I would point out that I’m an actress for a reason! If I were popular in high school, I would have considered another career because I wouldn’t have been alone in my room, making up other characters for myself. I definitely had growing pains. The popular kids didn’t want anything to do with the girl who was starting the drama club  (Characters Quotes) I get very involved in my characters. Sometimes I have a very hard time separating my characters from my life  (Characters Quotes) The less someone knows about me, the better, because my intention is to play a variety of characters  (Characters Quotes) You have to be involved and relate to the characters in order to make a film that is true emotionally  (Characters Quotes) Everyone can do a character the way they want to do it, unless the director tells them not to, which isn’t very common. I like to do my characters, if it’s not specific in the script, as myself  (Characters Quotes) I don’t want to just play gay characters,... I think it would get boring to play the same thing again and again and again  (Characters Quotes) I’ve been offered nymphomaniacs, kleptomaniacs, pyromaniacs, homicidal maniacs and just plain maniacs. I think producers felt that after playing a long series of noble and admirable characters there would be quite a lot of shock value in seeing me play something altogether different. But I prefer upbeat stories that send people out of the theater feeling better than they did coming in. It’s my cup of tea  (Characters Quotes) Writers shouldn’t fall in love with their characters so much that they lose sight of what they’re trying to accomplish. The idea is to write a whole story, a whole book. A writer has to be able to look at that story and see whether or not a character works, whether or not a character needs further definition  (Characters Quotes) You cannot have your news instantly and have it done well. You cannot have your news reduced to 140 characters or less without losing large parts of it. You cannot manipulate the news but not expect it to be manipulated against you. You cannot have your news for free; you can only obscure the costs. If as a culture we can learn this lesson, and if we can learn to love the hard work, we will save ourselves much trouble and collateral damage. We must remember: There is no easy way  (Characters Quotes) I like writing teen characters because they’re vulnerable to the newness of things; and vulnerability makes emotional responses raw, vital and unguarded. Lacking a context of consequences, choices are riskier and stakes higher. Life is lived without a safety net. As an author and reader, I find that a mighty charge to drama  (Characters Quotes) I always find myself gravitating to the analogy of a maze. Think of film noir and if you picture the story as a maze, you don’t want to be hanging above the maze watching the characters make the wrong choices because it’s frustrating. You actually want to be in the maze with them, making the turns at their side, that keeps it more exciting... I quite like to be in that maze  (Characters Quotes) In the stormy current of life characters are weights or floats which at one time make us glide along the bottom, and at another maintain us on the surface  (Characters Quotes) Characters tend to be either for or against the quest. If they assist it, they are idealized as simply gallant or pure; if they obstruct it, they are characterized as simply villainous or cowardly. Hence every typical character... tends to have his moral opposite confronting him, like black and white pieces in a chess game  (Characters Quotes) Maybe some folks are alcoholics and others are just voluntary drunks. Maybe some folks drink due to body chemistry and others due to their lazy characters. Maybe some have drinking problems, while others have problems enough to drink  (Characters Quotes) That’s what fiction writers do: create characters and do terrible things to them for the entertainment of others. If they feel guilty enough, they write happy endings  (Characters Quotes) Thoughts and feelings are suspended in a vacuum unless they instigate and feed the selected actions, and it is the characters actions which reveal the character in the play  (Characters Quotes) When you read a book, the neurons in your brain fire overtime, deciding what the characters are wearing, how they’re standing, and what it feels like the first time they kiss. No one shows you. The words make suggestions. Your brain paints the pictures  (Characters Quotes) My books usually end where they began. I try to bring characters back to a point that is familiar but different because of the growth that they have gone through  (Characters Quotes) I like unformed characters. This may be because, no matter how old I get, I am still unformed myself  (Characters Quotes) The characters in my films try to live honestly and make the most of the lives they’ve been given. I believe you must live honestly and develop your abilities to the full. People who do this are the real heroes  (Characters Quotes) It is so rare... to find a complete person, with a soul, a heart and an imagination; so rare for characters as ardent and restless as ours to meet and to be matched together, that I hardly know how to tell you what happiness it gives me to know you  (Characters Quotes) Kindness is the color in the cathedral window which woven into beautiful characters shuts out the hideous sights of a world which is all too practical  (Characters Quotes) I have learned never to judge any of the characters that I portay. Sometimes that is difficult to do because as a human being we tend to make judgements when we find out information about people and situations. In order to bring a character to life, though, I find that I cannot judge her or I won’t be true to her  (Characters Quotes) If the portraits of our absent friends are pleasant to us, which renew our memory of them and relieve our regret for their absence by a false and empty consolation, how much more pleasant are letters which bring us the written characters of the absent friend  (Characters Quotes) Cool? Am I cool? I don’t know, but I hope my characters are cool, in the sense of iconic. That’s my job, at its very essence  (Characters Quotes) I don’t write for an audience. I write for myself. And if I imagine an audience at all, it’s the characters, but I know that I would keep writing even if no one ever published me again, even if no one ever read me again  (Characters Quotes) Writing is work, but it’s also a compulsion, and once you get your characters on paper, you can’t abandon them. You have to respond to them  (Characters Quotes)
