Text Quotes
I want to continually play characters that speak to me, but also are different than what I’ve just done  (Characters Quotes) I love the feeling I get when I’m on a set; I love reading the scripts, playing the characters, getting to be someone else  (Characters Quotes) Also, in my acting, I feel very much like a storyteller, exploring the flaws of the characters that I interpret. I look for the imperfections, and I love a character that is just so flawed  (Characters Quotes) I never get the tall, blonde, glamorous roles because I’m not tall, blonde and glamorous. I’m more the wee, disturbing characters because of the way I look or sound  (Characters Quotes) I know that all cops are not sterling characters. But you have to have someone to root for. I balance it with rotten cops who will take a bribe, who will beat somebody up  (Characters Quotes) In the old days, I just could not leave characters alone. Now I just try to keep the ones that still have something in the way of stories to tell  (Characters Quotes) Character roles only indicate that they’re very different from who you are as a person, and for me, it’s fun hiding behind characters that are so unlike who I am  (Characters Quotes) Characters that are not the norm or a bit out of the ordinary are always a challenge as an actress. You learn more by using different tools for those type of characters. They are always much more fun to play and much more interesting. They take you places that you wouldn’t necessarily go in your everyday life  (Characters Quotes) I’ve had the opportunity to do a wide range of stuff, a lot of different characters and they’ve all had their own kind of thing  (Characters Quotes) I like straightforward names for my characters. When I get too symbolic with names or places, I start feeling like the characters and the story are less read, and I lose interest  (Characters Quotes) Before I started to make films, I didn’t give much thought to the way the characters were physically positioned in the story world  (Characters Quotes) I rarely return to characters. My characters, at least most of them, are much more a part of that superorganism that is the story than separate and independent creatures  (Characters Quotes) I shy away from plot structure that depends on the characters behaving in ways that are going to eventually be explained by their childhood, or by some recent trauma or event. People are incredibly complicated. Who knows why they are the way they are?  (Characters Quotes) It’s really a misconception to identify the writer with the main character, given that the author creates all the characters in the book. In certain ways, I’m every character  (Characters Quotes) I love to start characters in a place where you think you know them. We can make all kinds of assumptions about them and think they have no redeeming qualities, but like everyone, they’re complex  (Characters Quotes) I buy tons of magazines. They’re a big part of how I research characters. And I keep them around and go back to them years later. I just have stacks  (Characters Quotes) I like the opportunity to play characters who have these dark sides but make the audience empathize with them. You want them to think there is some kind of sweeter, softer side to it  (Characters Quotes) If you change a character too much, the audience falls out of love with the character, but characters need to evolve and grow over the years  (Characters Quotes) I do love doing films; I love going out and creating different characters for each film, and not having to be stuck with one role for many, many years. It’s a creative liberty that I love  (Characters Quotes) I feel like my responsibility as an actor is to make characters as compelling and believable as possible  (Characters Quotes) I think the world is a place for oddballs and freaks. I’m only interested in oddballs and freaks as characters  (Characters Quotes) I just like playing interesting, complex, complicated characters. I like films that also have an element of humor  (Characters Quotes) I’m someone who loves to play. I make films so I can have fun with the characters  (Characters Quotes) It is only when you open your veins and bleed onto the page a little that you establish contact with your reader. If you do not believe in the characters or the story you are doing at that moment with all your mind, strength, and will, if you don’t feel joy and excitement while writing it, then you’re wasting good white paper, even if it sells, because there are other ways in which a writer can bring in the rent money besides writing bad or phony stories  (Characters Quotes) Old characters never die, but I do need to take a break from them in order to create new ones  (Characters Quotes) Doing jobs that are completely different to the last thing I did pushes me as an actor to change as much as I can. It would be easy for me to stay in a similar vein of characters or jobs, but I’m drawn to challenging myself  (Characters Quotes) I grew up in a community where it was not the exception to be a good girl. It was sort of expected. And all of my friends were good girls too, and my boyfriends were good boys. Everybody was pretty nice. And that affects how I write my characters. There aren’t very many bad guys in my novels  (Characters Quotes) I see myself as a character actor, and I’ve always been drawn to playing characters that are different from myself because acting is escapism for me. I’ve never been that comfortable playing people that are like me  (Characters Quotes) I’m just an entertainer. In a way crime stories are boring. A crime’s been committed and at the end you know it will be solved. So you’ve got to make the story interesting besides it just being a plot. And that’s why character matters, why you’ve got to make the characters interesting  (Characters Quotes) Before 9/11, I was playing a wide range of characters. I would play a lover, a cop, a father. As long as I could create the illusion of the character, the part was given to me. But after 9/11, something changed. We became the villains, the bad guys. I don’t mind to play the bad guy as long as the bad guy has a base  (Characters Quotes)
