Text Quotes
Dialogue is the place that books are most alive and forge the most direct connection with readers. It is also where we as writers discover our characters and allow them to become real  (Characters Quotes) As a writer, as much as I try, I can’t stop writing female characters. They have so much more to offer; they have to wear so many different hats. There’s so much wonderful gray matter in a female’s life that it just makes for a stronger character  (Characters Quotes) I don’t steer towards anything. I steer towards character and truth. If it’s funny then so be it. If it’s dramatic, so be it. I just steer towards characters  (Characters Quotes) It’s very important to be able to distinguish the actors from the characters they play  (Characters Quotes) I do have characters who are more well known than I am, which suits me fine  (Characters Quotes) I find as a viewer, when I go to see comedies, the strain to be funny throughout the whole thing. I start to lose my sense of reality, and it ends up feeling like an empty experience; there’s funny stuff in it but I’ve lost the emotional connection to the characters because it’s just so bananas  (Characters Quotes) My impulse is to create an aesthetic that’s about a humanistic approach to a world and trying to create compassion for all the characters  (Characters Quotes) Unlike novel characters, comic book characters last an eternity. When a character is changed beyond recognition, there’s no longer the merchandising aspect  (Characters Quotes) Theater is a dance of a different kind, a dance of rawness and characters stripped down  (Characters Quotes) I watched so many comic book movies where the actors weren’t as built as the characters in the book. It made me mad because they didn’t look right  (Characters Quotes) First person allows deeper insight into the protagonist’s character. It allows the reader to identify more fully with the protagonist and to share her world quite intimately. So it suits a story focused on one character’s personal journey. However, first person shuts out insights into other characters  (Characters Quotes) Third person allows a deeper exploration of the relationships between characters. We can see their misunderstandings and hear what they think about each other. We can create a more complex structure with various story threads running parallel  (Characters Quotes) I’m certainly not shy, but I like playing it because I love those characters that are incredibly confident but really still a mess  (Characters Quotes) I just want to keep laying down really great, strong characters, and the more I go unrecognized, the better job I feel I’m doing  (Characters Quotes) People think I’m thick because of the characters I play. I think I’m brighter than the characters. Well, I hope I am  (Characters Quotes) I think to be writer you have to enjoy being alone. I was a loner as a teenager and was always drawn to characters in books and films who were at the fringes  (Characters Quotes) All of the disparate books on my list contain characters, scenes or voices that linger long past the last page of their stories  (Characters Quotes) My novels tend to come about from a fusion of two big ideas, creating a critical mass that then fissions, throwing off hundreds of other particles, riffs, tropes and characters  (Characters Quotes) However appalling to consider, however tedious to enact, every novel requires furniture, whether it is to be named or unnamed, for the characters will be unable to remain in standing position for the duration of the story  (Characters Quotes) I’m infinitely more involved in the reality of the characters and their situation than I am in everyday life  (Characters Quotes) I don’t think plot as a plot means much today. I’d say that everybody has seen every plot twenty times. What they haven’t seen is characters and their relation to one another. I don’t worry much about plot anymore  (Characters Quotes) I guarantee you that two directors that are any good can take the same story, change the name of the characters, change the name of the town, and make an entirely different picture  (Characters Quotes) I wanted to have very strong female characters. I just thought it was always the way the world should be  (Characters Quotes) You set up the story, but the characters start talking, and they go places that you didn’t expect. You have to follow  (Characters Quotes) I don’t mind what the role is at all; I just want to play cool characters  (Characters Quotes) I love it when characters surprise you, just like real people. When I write a scene I just try to make the characters behave in a way that feels natural to them. Sometimes that means they make a left turn and do something unexpected. Those are always the best scenes in my opinion  (Characters Quotes) One of my biggest pet peeves is that I just don’t like it when characters do things that are funny to the writer, but you don’t know why they’re doing it and it doesn’t make any sense  (Characters Quotes) Usually I like playing other people. I like finding myself through other characters. But when you do cabaret, you are yourself. I think it’s the most fun, and I tell you, if somebody had told me that, I would have done it fifteen years earlier than I did  (Characters Quotes) Fiction should be about moral dilemmas that are so bloody difficult that the author doesn’t know the answer. What I hate in fiction is when the author knows better than the characters what they should do  (Characters Quotes) My first two novels were set in the past, and that freed me up in a lot of ways; it allowed me to find my way into my story and my characters through research  (Characters Quotes)
