I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer. One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time  (English Quotes) I did a film when I was about 30; it’s a coming of age story called ‘Gas Food Lodging,’ and I’m so proud of that little independent film. I play this young English geologist, and he’s such a simple, loving kind of guy. Doesn’t talk too much. He’s just a quiet guy, and he gets the girl  (English Quotes) Jesus is not from Georgia. Jesus does not speak English. And Jesus is not a member of the NRA  (English Quotes) [Doing a bilingual album] helped artistically because whenever I got bored of writing in English, I would write in Spanish. It’s always cool when you have the choice  (English Quotes) We are always giving foreign names to very native things. If there is a thing that reeks of the glorious tradition of the old English tavern, it is toasted cheese. But for some wild reason we call it Welsh rarebit. I believe that what we call Irish stew might more properly be called English stew, and that it is not particularly familiar in Ireland  (English Quotes) Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English. Be positive, not negative  (English Quotes) The English are terribly lazy about fighting. They like to get it over and done with and then set up a game of cricket  (English Quotes) As a linguist, I don’t think of Ada as a big language. Now, English and Japanese, those are big languages. Ada is just a medium-sized language  (English Quotes) The Portuguese, Dutch and English have been for a long time year after year, shipping home the treasures of India in their big vessels. We Germans have been all along been left to watch it. Germany would do likewise, but hers would be treasures of spiritual knowledge  (English Quotes) Reeducation needs careful tending, like an English lawn. Even one moment of negligence, and the weeds crop up again ~ those indestructible weeds of historical truth  (English Quotes) School was rough for me. I was a good student in middle school, but high school wasn’t so fun. I still pulled through, though! I excelled in art, fashion, history and English literature - anything creative. Math and science I struggled a bit more in  (English Quotes) I went to study English for two reasons. Principally because when I was in university, studying drama wasn’t considered an option. You couldn’t get a degree course for it. And so many plays and things that I was interested in landed themselves in a broader spectrum of literature  (English Quotes) My English teacher always gave me scripts for plays, but I was into sports. My friend said there were small parts I could go up for, but the director gave me the part of Mozart, which was kind of the lead role. From then on I just loved it  (English Quotes) I was writing full time after quitting a job as a high school English teacher, and I hadn’t been able to sell anything, and my bank account was down to zero, and all of my friends were like ‘What are you doing in the basement, when are you going to get a real job?’, and my parents thought I’d completely lost it  (English Quotes) Of John Le Carre’s books, I’ve only read ‘The Spy Who Came In From The Cold,’ and I haven’t read anything by Graham Greene, but I’ve heard a great deal about how ‘Your Republic Is Calling You’ reminded English readers of those two writers. I don’t really have any particular interest in Cold War spy novels  (English Quotes) Jewish history has been in my cultural DNA since I was a child growing up in post-war London. In the midst of that dark, gray, lamenting monochromatic world of the 50s, I had a sense that both Jewish and English history were full of color and light and animation  (English Quotes) Throughout most of my life, I’ve tried to downplay my Chinese heritage because I wanted so much to be an American. I was the only Asian kid in my elementary school, and I longed to be like everyone else. I insisted on American food; I was embarrassed by my mother’s poor English  (English Quotes) The people who run the major banks have MBAs and wear suits. And when those people in suits come to the homes of people who don’t have a high school diploma, don’t even speak English, and offer them a home at zero percent down, that doesn’t make a hell of a lot of sense  (English Quotes) I was excellent at English and Drama. Maths and Science I was terrible at. I didn’t have any interest in them. I was happiest at lunchtime, playing with my friends. But I love science now, that’s the funny thing. And I’d be so good at geography, as I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world  (English Quotes) Shakespearean words, foreign words, slang and dialect and made-up phrases from kids on the street corner: English has room for them all. And writers - not just literary writers, but popular writers as well - breathe air into English and keep it lively by making it their own, not by adhering to some style manual that gets handed out to college Freshmen in a composition class  (English Quotes) You have to be a whole, dignified, self-respecting person in order to be an English teacher or whatever kind of job your education would prepare you for, and I just knew that segregation was wrong, and I knew that I should not be going along with it. That I should resist it  (English Quotes) I certainly enjoyed having my sister, because when she came I felt a certain responsibility to help her fit in, and help her learn English. I wanted her to play with all my toys. I was actually, I think, really scary to her, because I had so much energy  (English Quotes) James Joyce’s English was based on the rhythm of the Irish language. He wrote things that shocked English language speakers but he was thinking in Gaelic. I’ve sung songs that if they were in English, would have been banned too. The psyche of the Irish language is completely different to the English-speaking world  (English Quotes) Using the passive voice is always very helpful. Mind you, a lot of that propaganda English emanates from here. The British establishment has always used the passive voice. It’s been a weapon of discourse so those who committed terrible acts in the old empire could not be identified  (English Quotes) I can be a bit of a science geek. I tend more towards reading about brain science, neuroscience. I was an English major, so I love discussing possibilities and alternate theories.
