Text Quotes
Words can mean different things to different people. It is important to understand what people mean when they use a certain word. Let’s make an example. Take the word gay. Fifty years ago, gay meant exclusively cheerfulness, lighthearted excitement, merry or bright colors. Today this word has a different meaning. You won’t call a cheerful person gay because it could be understood as something else  (Gay Quotes) I’ve actually performed at Gay Pride in Atlanta three times in my career. I’ve always had a large gay following, particularly in the lesbian community. I am grateful for that. To me, it means my music transcends categories. It also means that I’m a cute girl singing a rock song in an alto voice!  (Gay Quotes) There may be people in my audience who may not agree with me on some particular issue - you know, say, as a gun owner, they may not agree with me, or, you know, someone may not agree with me on a gay marriage topic. Any of those things. But those shouldn’t be the reasons you listen to my music  (Gay Quotes) A secondhand wardrobe hand clothes doesn’t make one an artist. Neither do a hair-trigger temper, melancholic nature, propensity for tears, hating your parents, or HIV. I hate to say it - none of these make one an artist. They can help, but just as being gay doesn’t make one witty... the only thing that makes one an artist is making art  (Gay Quotes) When AIDS hit, lots of people banded together to take care of each other and do what the government wasn’t doing. When you grow up Jewish, as I have, you learn that everybody hates you, no one’s going to help you, and you have to take care of yourself. That’s a great maxim to the gay community, and we took it to heart; we took care of our own  (Gay Quotes) What’s it like to figure out you’re gay and then begin the process of coming out? Well, for most of my life, I felt doomed. I could imagine no path that would allow me to realize my authentic self. I felt the need to lie, even to myself, insisting: I am straight  (Gay Quotes) Liberalism in various guises - feminism, the sexual revolution, gay activism - has been at war with marriage and family for several decades now. And when do-gooders look around at the wreckage of human lives caused by disintegrating families, they call for government to act as father, mother, brother, and sister  (Gay Quotes) To try and imagine that I’m another person is always going to be hard - whether I’m writing about a truck driver or someone who is gay, who’s trans, who is of a different ethnicity or creed. But it would be boring if I always had to write about myself and my limited viewpoint  (Gay Quotes) I’m a progressive. What I find is that a subsection within the left that instead of standing for consistency in progressive values, so feminism as applied to mainstream society, as well as within minority communities, gay rights to mainstream society as well as within minority communities  (Gay Quotes) Ostracism means you don’t exist at all. And that’s a very difficult situation to live with. As gay people, we had been chasing ostracism by that point for probably 300 years. You just knew that you should have dropped into your black hole  (Gay Quotes) The Washington Post speaking out against state legislation that he believed would let businesses deny services to gay, lesbian and transgender people. [Tim] Cook himself came out as gay in the pages of Bloomberg Businessweek  (Gay Quotes) I don’t get this shitty attitude that only gays should care about gay issues and only women should care about women’s issues  (Gay Quotes) There are different ways that kids who are gay take on the rejection and alienation they feel. The way I dealt with it was to say, ‘You know what? You’re imposing judgments on me and condemnations, but I don’t accept them. I’m going to instead turn the light on you and see what your flaws are and impose the same judgmental standards on you.’  (Gay Quotes) Compared to being caught in the wrong body, being plagued by ‘dysmorphic OCD thoughts,’ being gay is commonplace and mostly accepted. What once seemed unimaginable and shameful has been revealed to be perfectly normal  (Gay Quotes) I’m trying to tell kids if they are gay, it’s OK to be gay. I’ve tried to tell families if they have a gay family member to accept them and love them as they always have  (Gay Quotes) Why did mainstream America come to accept marriage equality? Gay leaders had made a convincing case that gay families were like straight families and should have the same rights. The American spirit of fair play had been invoked  (Gay Quotes) You know who sang at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding? Elton John! According to Rush, gay people can sing at weddings. Just not their own  (Gay Quotes) I’ve heard people tell me there’s never been a gay character like Agron on TV before, and some fans have even thanked me because they now feel like they have a gay action hero, and it’s very endearing to hear that kind of stuff. But I just played him the way he was and tried to do right by the character  (Gay Quotes) I think there are profound differences between the civil rights struggle for African Americans and the civil rights struggle for gay Americans.  (Gay Quotes) First, I was opposed to gay marriage because it seemed like one more way that gays were wanting to assimilate. When I realized the Christian right was so opposed to it, as well as tyrannical governments in Africa and Russia, I thought, ‘It must be a good thing to fight for.’  (Gay Quotes) Romney is a classic case of re-invention. As governor of Massachusetts, he supported government-sponsored healthcare, was sympathetic to gay rights, and opposed harsh restrictions on abortion. After measuring the difference between the Massachusetts electorate and the national one to which he must now appeal, he has reversed those positions.  (Gay Quotes) I’m an activist for gay marriage equality and children’s rights. I’m the face of Share Our Strength.  (Gay Quotes) Most Americans are fiscally conservative and socially liberal. I’m advocating a balanced budget. But along with that, look, there should be gay marriage equality. A woman should have the right to choose. Let’s not build a fence across the border.  (Gay Quotes) It is at least a small comfort to me, as a gay rights and marriage equality advocate, to know that like any marriage, gay and lesbian couples are subject to the same complications and hardships that afflict marriages between heterosexual couples,  (Gay Quotes) All my life, I have loved balloons - all balloons - the heavy English sort, immense and round, that have to be pushed about, and the gay, light, gas-filled French ones that soar into the air the moment you let go of them.  (Gay Quotes) I grew up in the South but I started dancing in my twenties when I got out of the Air Force, and studying dance, you’re surrounded by gay guys all the time. You get to know them and you have to shift gears!  (Gay Quotes) In the Air Force, I had an old Wilcox Gay recorder, and I used to hear guitar runs on that recorder going (vocalizing) like the chords on I Walk The Line. And I always wanted to write a love song using that theme, that tune.  (Gay Quotes) I’ve never really worked on them. Just once in a while one hits me and makes me laugh. My Al Gore was sort of like a gay Gomer Pyle.  (Gay Quotes) I had a radio show at the local college and I got kicked off the air and banished forever for playing music from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Alice Cooper, and David Bowie because (quote-unquote) They were gay. So, things have changed quite a bit.  (Gay Quotes) I think we all have a slightly gay gene inside us, don’t we? It might be 0.00001 per cent as mine is, or one per cent as yours is.  (Gay Quotes)
