Goodness, armed with power, is corrupted; and pure love without power is destroyed

Reinhold Niebuhr, a prominent American theologian and ethicist, is often associated with the quote, “Goodness, armed with power, is corrupted; and pure love without power is destroyed.” This statement encapsulates Niebuhr’s belief in the complex and often paradoxical nature of human existence, particularly when it comes to the interplay between morality, power, and love.

Niebuhr was a strong advocate for social justice and believed in the importance of using power to combat injustice and oppression. However, he also recognized the inherent dangers of wielding power without a strong moral compass.
