My parents were big music fans, and my dad plays music, so I grew up with Madonna, Frank Zappa, the Beatles, Alice In Chains... it was all over the place. My mother and sister and I used to live with my grandparents and various cousins. We shared a two-bedroom tenement, and the three of us slept in one of those bedrooms and had a set of bunk beds.  (Grew Quotes) I did grow up in Kenosha, Wisconsin, around a lot of my mom’s family. I had a lot of cousins and aunts and uncles around me, and my sisters and my brother. Probably the most formative part of it was that we grew up on the edge of a forest. It wasn’t a big forest, but it was enough. When you’re a kid, it feels gigantic.  (Grew Quotes) I grew up in southeastern Oklahoma on a working cattle ranch, and it was always very romantic to me: The West, the cowboy, the Western way of life.  (Grew Quotes) I grew up in a small town in West Virginia called Kenova. In Terrell, Texas, where I grew up, there was a guy that would walk down the street talking to himself. And I used to watch him and feel uneasy. And there was a sanitarium where people would say, ‘That’s where all the crazy people go.’ It really sort of frightened me.  (Grew Quotes) We grew up in a very creative environment and were exposed to the arts at a very young age, so it’s not a surprise that all of us are in some form of the arts.  (Grew Quotes) I grew up in such a musical family, and my dad was the first chair in the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra, and my mom was a piano teacher and a painter, so it was kind of a creative environment, and it was kind of in my DNA.  (Grew Quotes) I grew up in the Southwest Bronx. Father an accountant, mother a schoolteacher. Brother was six years older, which explains why I gobbled crystal meth at 12, smoked hashish at 13, and was shooting smack at 17, which explains how I got Hepatitis C, which was the basis of my first book, which was a humor book about dying.  (Grew Quotes) I grew up in Africa surrounded by a lot of culture. It’s made me aware that the world is a big place.  (Grew Quotes) I grew up poor and used to look at people in big houses and thought they had everything. Then, later on, I looked at models in magazines and thought they had it all. When you have the ability to live that life, to some extent you find out that they don’t have any magic cure for everything.  (Grew Quotes) I grew up working on farms. You’d do anything for money. You’d pick blueberries in the summertime for weeks; you’d cut down, like, spruce and fir trees for pulp.  (Grew Quotes) I actually grew up hearing this a lot: ‘If you’re an actor, you can only be an actor, and you have to just do that.’ But in order to be a good actor, you have to draw on life experiences. To only concentrate on acting, you’re cutting yourself off.  (Grew Quotes) My dad grew up with an avocado tree in his backyard. My entire family, my wife and daughters, they love avocado. I may well be allergic. It makes me physically sick.  (Grew Quotes) I love martial-arts movies. I grew up with my dad watching kung-fu theater every Sunday. So it was kind of my thing.  (Grew Quotes) There are absolutely no problems between me, my dad and my sister. Obviously I grew up with just my mum, but my relationship with my dad is just fine.  (Grew Quotes) I was born in Dallas, and I grew up both there and in New York City, which was very schizophrenic  (Grew Quotes) I grew up in Orange County, without a team. I never affiliated myself with the Chargers, south of me, or the Raiders, north of me. I’ve always followed the Dallas Cowboys. I’ve been a huge fan since the early 90s.  (Grew Quotes) We grew up in the good old days before kids had these damn computers and actually played outside  (Grew Quotes) I grew up in the era when Dan Rather hated Richard Nixon.
