Text Quotes
Controversy is always a beautiful thing. I love controversy and I try to fan it as much as I can without having my husband’s head pop off!  (Head Quotes) I write my books in my head, and not in a specific study with a view. The view is from my inner eyes  (Head Quotes) My mother would thump me sharply on the head with a thimble or a spoon if I became too noisy with the whistle when I was playing I was a steamboat captain. She had no sense of the dignity of command  (Head Quotes) I can see how you could get dragged into the bad stuff, but I’ve got good friends around me, good family. I think I’ve got my head screwed on  (Head Quotes) I slide my arm from under the sleeper’s head and it is numb, full of swarming pins, on the tip of each, waiting to be counted, the fallen angels sit  (Head Quotes) I started running around my 30th birthday. I wanted to lose weight; I didn’t anticipate the serenity. Being in motion, suddenly my body was busy and so my head could work out some issues I had swept under a carpet of wine and cheese. Good therapy, that’s a good run  (Head Quotes) I often think of random melodies. And I pretty much hear in my head what I want to do with the orchestra as I’m writing on the piano  (Head Quotes) I’m my own worst critic, and if I don’t pull off what I think I wanted to do in my head, then I won’t be a happy girl  (Head Quotes) What faith has not been used by demagogues as a club over somebody’s head?  (Head Quotes) I do not have a bride gene. I haven’t been planning a wedding since I was 3. I never put a sheet on my head and pretended that it was a veil  (Head Quotes) She should have done science, not spent all her time with her head in novels. Novels gave you a completely false idea about life, they told lies and they implied there were endings when in reality there were no endings, everything just went on and on and on  (Head Quotes) In a great gasp, puts her head in her hands again and cries as if her throat were a cave, as if the howling winds came from her belly, she cries like a storm that will never end  (Head Quotes) It’s lovely to know that the world can’t interfere with the inside of your head  (Head Quotes) My heart broke all over again. I wanted my life back, my mama, but I knew I would never have that. The child I had been was gone with the child she had been. We were new people, and we didn’t know each other anymore. I shook my head desperately  (Head Quotes) The human head is of the same approximate size and weight as a roaster chicken. I have never before had occasion to make the comparison, for never before today have I seen a head in a roasting pan  (Head Quotes) I saw the sky and sea and sand and the flickering flames of the bonfire through my tears. All at once, it rushed into my head with tremendous speed, and made me feel dizzy. It was beautiful. Everything that happened was shockingly beautiful, enough to make you crazy  (Head Quotes) Like flies in amber, like corpses frozen in in ice, that which according to the laws of nature should pass away is by the miracle of ink on paper, preserved. It is a kind of magic. As one tends the graves of the dead, so I tend the books. And every day I open a volume or two, read a few lines or pages, allow the voices of the forgotten dead to resonate inside my head  (Head Quotes) You were born into a state of grace. It is impossible for you to leave it. You will die in a state of grace whether or not special words are spoken for you, or water or oil is poured upon your head. You share this blessing with the animals and all other living things. You cannot fall out of grace, nor can it be taken from you. You can ignore it. You can hold beliefs that blind you to its existence. You will still be graced but unable to perceive you own uniqueness and integrity, and blind also to other attributes with which you are automatically gifted  (Head Quotes) Our riches, being in our brains, die with us... Unless of course someone chops off our head, in which case, we won’t need them anyway  (Head Quotes) Punctuationally speaking, wonder is a period at the end of a statement we’ve long taken for granted, suddenly looking up and seeing the sinuous curve of a tall black hat on its head, and realizing it was a question mark all along  (Head Quotes) You may not believe in magic but something very strange is happening at this very moment. Your head has dissolved into thin air and I can see the rhododendrons through your stomach. It’s not that you are dead or anything dramatic like that, it is simply that you are fading away and I can’t even remember your name  (Head Quotes) And while one is brought up with luxury and caresses, and is thrown bewildered and despairing into a dark pit, another is lifted from the pit and raised to a throne where a jeweled crown is placed on his head. The world has no shame in doing this; it is prompt to hand out both pleasure and pain and has no need of us an our doings  (Head Quotes) There is a distinct difference between having an open mind and having a hole in your head from which your brain leaks out  (Head Quotes) Clearly the secret of happiness... is a variation on the general principle of banging your head against a wall, and then stopping  (Head Quotes) As the days piled up into weeks, and the weeks turned into months, and fall slid into winter, I realized one of the great truths about tragedy: You can dream of disappearing. You can wish for oblivion, for endless sleep or the escape of fiction, of walking into a river with your pockets full of stones, of letting the dark water close over your head. But if you’ve got kids, the web of the world holds you close and wraps you tight and keeps you from falling no matter how badly you think you want to fall  (Head Quotes) Adam strokes my head, my face, he kisses my tears. We are blessed. Let them all go. The sound of a bird flying low across the garden. Then nothing. Nothing. A cloud passes. Nothing again. Light falls through the window, falls onto me, into me. Moments. All gathering towards this one  (Head Quotes) And have your mother put my head on a stake? Do you have any notion what that would do to my handsome good looks?  (Head Quotes) You really should do some research for a change instead of just listening to the voices in your head  (Head Quotes) The truly great books are the few books that are over everybody’s head all of the time  (Head Quotes) The sea’s only gifts are harsh blows, and occasionally the chance to feel strong. Now I don’t know much about the sea, but I do know that that’s the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once. To find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. Facing the blind death stone alone, with nothing to help you but your hands and your own head  (Head Quotes)
