Text Quotes
There's something about rushing water that I can watch for hours and feel as if I need to do nothing more. It's alive in a way that's greater than any description of it  (I Can Quotes) So many will try to destroy me. So many, over and over, coming in periods of greatness. But in this period, I cannot be broken  (I Can Quotes) By the time we are women, fear is as familiar to us as air. It is our element. We live in it, we inhale it, we exhale it, and most of the time we do not even notice it. Instead of I am afraid, we say, I don't want to, or I don't know how, or I can't  (I Can Quotes) It's been the same story ever since I can remember, ever since Wilson – the Republicans don't do a thing for the little man  (I Can Quotes) When I look at my old pictures, all I can see is what I used to be but am no longer. I think: What I can see is what I am not  (I Can Quotes) There is a logic [to my reading], but I can't define it. I like reading impulsively. I collect books, I have a lot of them, but most of them I have not read yet. I'll read them when they call me from the shelf  (I Can Quotes) Prayer goes up and thought comes down - or so it seems. As far as I can tell, that's the only difference  (I Can Quotes) The human species, according to the best theory I can form of it, is composed of two distinct races, the men who borrow and the men who lend  (I Can Quotes) One of the many things I love about bound books is their sheer physicality. Electronic books live out of sight and out of mind. But printed books have body, presence.... I often seek electronic books, but they never come after me. They may make me feel, but I can't feel them. They are all soul with no flesh, no texture, and no weight  (I Can Quotes) I often forget that other people's stories aren't simply introductions to my own more engaging, more dramatic, more relevant, and better-told tales, but rather ends in themselves, tales I can learn from or repeat or dissect or savor  (I Can Quotes) Whether you like it or not, you are committed to the human endeavor. I cannot ally myself with such a purely negative goal as avoidance of suffering. Suffering is a chance you take by the fact of being alive  (I Can Quotes) I am not a person and I am not an animal. There is something I am here for something I must do before I can go  (I Can Quotes) I love to lose myself in other men's minds. When am not walking, I am reading; I cannot sit and think. Books think for me  (I Can Quotes) For myself, I long ago decided that I would rather know the truth than be happy in ignorance. If I cannot have both truth and happiness, give me truth. We'll have a long time to be happy in heaven  (I Can Quotes) When I consider how little of a rarity children are - that every street and blind alley swarms with them - that the poorest people commonly have them in most abundance - that there are few marriages that are not blest with at least one of these bargains - how often they turn out ill, and defeat the fond hopes of their parents, taking to vicious courses, which end in poverty, disgrace, the gallows, etc. - I cannot for my life tell what cause for pride there can possibly be in having them  (I Can Quotes) Disneyland is like a piece of clay: If there is something I don't like, I'm not stuck with it. I can reshape and revamp  (I Can Quotes) Somehow I can't believe that there are any heights that can't be scaled by a man who knows the secrets of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C s. They are curiosity, confidence, courage, and constancy  (I Can Quotes) I love to lose myself in other men's minds. When I am not walking, I am reading, I cannot sit and think. Books think for me  (I Can Quotes) If there is anything more delicious than a sausage roasted over an open Bunsen burner, I can't image what it might be - Porcelain and I tore into our food like cannibals after a missionary famine  (I Can Quotes) It isn't that I dislike artists, but I can't stand anyone who puts on those ponderous airs of a man of character  (I Can Quotes) I am afraid because I can so clearly foresee my own life rotting away of itself, like a leaf that rots without falling, while I pursue my round of existence from day to day  (I Can Quotes) Maybe those sorts of yes-or-no life-and-death decisions are easier to make because they are so black and white. I can cope with them because it's easier. Human emotions, well... they're just a fathomless collection of grays and I don't do so well on the midtones  (I Can Quotes) Thinking and prayer are much the same thing anyway, when you stop to think about it - if that makes any sense. Prayer goes up and thought comes down - or so it seems. As far as I can tell, that's the only difference  (I Can Quotes) Mine has been a life of much shame. I can't even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being  (I Can Quotes) As long as I can make them laugh, it doesn't matter how, I'll be alright. If I succeed in that, the human beings probably won't mind it too much if I remain outside their lives. The one thing I must avoid is becoming offensive in their eyes: I shall be nothing, the wind, the sky  (I Can Quotes) I am convinced that those people whom the world considers good and respects are all liars and fakes. I do not trust the world. My only ally is the tagged dissolute. The tagged dissolute. That is the only cross on which I wish to be crucified. Though ten thousand people criticize me, I can throw in their teeth my challenge: Are you not all the more dangerous for being without tags?  (I Can Quotes) I must go on living. And, though it may be childish of me, I can't go on in simple compliance. From now on I must struggle with the world. I thought that Mother might well be the last of those who can end their lives beautifully and sadly, struggling with no one, neither hating nor betraying anyone. In the world to come there will be no room for such people. The dying are beautiful, but to live, to survive – those things somehow seem hideous and contaminated with blood  (I Can Quotes) I can think of nothing that an audience won't understand. The only problem is to interest them;once they are interested, they understand anything in the world  (I Can Quotes) It is not enough that I hold an inspired book in my hands. I must have an inspired heart... Revelation is the ground upon which we stand. Revelation tells us what to believe. The Bible is the book of God and I stand for it with all my heart. But before I can be saved, there must be illumination, penitence, renewal, inward deliverance  (I Can Quotes) I can remember walking as a child. It was not customary to say you were fatigued. It was customary to complete the goal of the expedition  (I Can Quotes)
