Text Quotes
I write because to write a new sentence, let alone a new poem, is to cross the threshold into both a larger existence and a profound mystery. A thought was not there, then it is. An image, a story, an idea about what it is to be human, did not exist, then it does. With every new poem, an emotion new to the heart, to the world, speaks itself into being  (Image Quotes) When I write, I don’t know what is going to emerge. I begin in a condition of complete unknowing, an utter nakedness of concept or goal. A word appears, another word appears, an image. It is a moving into mystery  (Image Quotes) Memories are like holograms: you recreate in your head the whole image of something which isn’t there  (Image Quotes) Objects and their functions no longer had any significance. All I perceived was perception itself, the hell of forms and figures devoid of human emotion and detached from the reality of my unreal environment. I was an instrument in a virtual world that constantly renewed its own meaningless image in a living world that was itself perceived outside of nature. And since the appearance of things was no longer definitive but limitless, this paradisiacal awareness freed me from the reality external to myself. The fire and the rose, as it were, became one  (Image Quotes) Every shot I have ever made has been a compromise in some way. No image has ever been as good as the one I envisioned in my mind’s eye  (Image Quotes) When I was young I would ask everybody what life was about. Now it’s clear to me that the image of each existence shows its own answer to that question  (Image Quotes) The more light you have in an image, the less drama you get. The details start taking over; the mystery is all gone  (Image Quotes) As you see something that yo want to shot and it’s bearing down on you, it’s important to start framing long before the subject gets close to you. The light will reveal itself possibly long before you want to take the image, but you have to wait until the picture comes to you, and if you’ve been anticipating carefully when the subject will be in position, the background will have been figured out in advance  (Image Quotes) The awareness of the quality of space in out photos is akin to our awareness of the very air in our photos, the atmosphere that pervades every square inch of our image and yet is often invisible to the photographer  (Image Quotes) Color really doesn’t have interaction if it’s full of colors. It’s the interaction or relationship among or between colors that makes a color image. This usually happens with a few colors, not a glut of them  (Image Quotes) We know that behind every image revealed there is another image more faithful to reality, and in the back of that image there is another, and yet another behind the last one, and so on, up to the true image of that absolute, mysterious reality that no one will ever see  (Image Quotes) I was attracted to photography because it was technical, full of gadgets, and I was obsessed with science. But at some point around fifteen or sixteen, I had a sense that photography could provide a bridge from the world of science to the world of art, or image. Photography was a means of crossing into a new place I didn’t know  (Image Quotes) It’s weird being a photographer because you really have to divorce yourself from the image  (Image Quotes) Because if one has an image, however dim and romantic, of a journey’s end, one may, in the end, surely reach it, after no matter how many detours and deceptions and abandonings of hope. And hope could never have been entirely abandoned, even in the worst days  (Image Quotes) There is a difference between image and reputation. Image is nice. Reputation is developed over an entire career. Reputation is what I’m searching for  (Image Quotes) I like to make an image that is so simple you can’t avoid it, and so complicated you can’t figure it out  (Image Quotes) To say that a thing is imaginary is not to dispose of it in the realm of mind, for the imagination, or the image making faculty, is a very important part of our mental functioning. An image formed by the imagination is a reality from the point of view of psychology; it is quite true that it has no physical existence, but are we going to limit reality to that which is material? We shall be far out of our reckoning if we do, for mental images are potent things, and although they do not actually exist on the physical plane, they influence it far more than most people suspect  (Image Quotes) Today I live on an island, in a house that is sad, hard, severe, that I built for myself, solitary on a sheer rock over the sea: a house that is the spectre, the secret image of prison. The image of my nostalgia. Maybe I never desired, not even then, to escape from jail. Man is not meant to live freely in freedom, but to be free inside a prison  (Image Quotes) What I’m doing, with my image, I have my perfumes. I’ve had that for almost 20 years, and I have like 14, 15 different perfumes now  (Image Quotes) Nobody admires anyone else without qualification. If they do they’re after an image, not a person  (Image Quotes) When a seed sprouts, it’s a violent process. The skin breaks and splits in two. Something dies and something is born. Anytime you paint a strong or violent image, you may be expressing that part of yourself that’s opening in order to let the new emerge  (Image Quotes) I don’t get wrapped up in technique and the like. I have a simple rule and that is to spend as much time in the location as possible. You can’t expect to take a definitive image in half an hour. It takes days, often years. And in fact I don’t believe there is such a thing as a definitive picture of something. The land is a living, breathing thing and light changes its character every second of every day. That’s why I love it so much  (Image Quotes) What does open us is sharing our vulnerabilities. Sometimes we see a couple who has done this difficult work over a lifetime. In the process, they have grown old together. We can sense the enormous comfort, the shared quality of ease between these people. It is beautiful, and very rare. Without this quality of openness and vulnerability, partners don’t really know each other; they are one image living with another image  (Image Quotes) Many young girls are constantly consumed by controlling and managing their body image to the extent that they are much more involved in the production of the self than in living  (Image Quotes) The size of your accomplishments, the quality of your achievement, will depend very largely on how big a man you see in yourself, what sort of image you get of your possible self, yourself at your best  (Image Quotes) People think of my entire image as a kid who lives a straight and narrow life, so I can feel myself not being able to act comfortably. I’ve been thinking that I want to go through some different life experiences and have been learning a lot while living with my other members  (Image Quotes) You have to think about your image and how you want people to view you. And if it becomes too much, people will get kind of tired of you  (Image Quotes) A film in which the speech and sound effects are perfectly synchronized and coincide with their visual image on the screen is absolutely contrary to the aims of cinema. It is a degenerate and misguided attempt to destroy the real use of the film and cannot be accepted as coming within the true boundaries of the cinema  (Image Quotes) Fiction ought to announce the problems, dramatize the problems, display them. Yet offer no set answer. An answer would solve the mystery. Writing fiction, for me, is about putting on paper my obsessive interest in something mysterious. I may figure out the source of the mystery, the things that brought some action or image to my mind, but to make an equation of it would ruin the story  (Image Quotes) I do not see why the loss of faith in the known image and symbol in our time should be celebrated as a freedom. It is a loss from which we suffer, and this pathos motivates modern painting and poetry at its heart  (Image Quotes)
