Text Quotes
I’ve been saying for almost 20 years that I need to do a jazz project and it ought to be either big band or I should do some jazz songs with a trio or quartet.  (Jazz Quotes) Big band music, to me, it really has three key elements. First is the lyrics are really sweet, and they’re just really family-friendly. The second thing is the music is jazz music, so the music is complicated enough to hold your attention for 5 or 6 million plays. That makes the songs interesting. The last part is the fact that it’s danceable.  (Jazz Quotes) When I was a kid, I used to listen to my Emerson radio late at night under the covers. I started by listening to jazz in the late 1940s and then vocal harmony groups like the Four Freshmen, the Modernaires and the Hi-Lo’s. I loved Stan Kenton’s big band - with those dark chords and musicians who could swing cool with individual sounds.  (Jazz Quotes) I think The Doors are one of the classic groups, and I think we’re all tempted to feel like the time in which we grew up was somehow special, but I really do believe that there were two golden eras in music: The Forties and Fifties of big band, jazz and swing, and the Sixties and Seventies of rock. To me, they’re really unparalleled.  (Jazz Quotes) I love most melodic music - classical, reggae, big band, jazz, blues, country, pop, swing, folk  (Jazz Quotes) You always come back to Duke Ellington - he’s kind of like the thread that holds everything together from the big band descending to lots of jazz, actually.  (Jazz Quotes) Jazz is the big brother of the blues. If a guy’s playing blues like we play, he’s in high school. When he starts playing jazz it’s like going on to college, to a school of higher learning.  (Jazz Quotes) I don’t get pat down, you know what’s on the waist, I don’t mean Jazz when I say I count base. Fly Louis sneakers, Purple Tape coming out the speakers, Bumped into my high school teachers, They said I wouldn’t be nothing, sitting on the bleachers. Now I’m sitting in the Phantom, trynna figure out the features. I’m a big fish now, I watch for the leeches.  (Jazz Quotes) Growing up playing jazz and improvising has had a big impact on me, and it translates into my music.  (Jazz Quotes) I fear that I won’t get better and that I won’t have time to practice. To be called a jazz musician - it’s a big responsibility.  (Jazz Quotes) I got my first set of drums when I was around 3. I went from band to marching band to Latin jazz band - it’s like riding a bike.  (Jazz Quotes) My big influences are Joni Mitchell, and a lot of classical and Indian music, as well as Nina Simone and the personal blues and jazz of Billie Holiday. Other influences for me include Bjork, Nick Drake, and Sufjan Stevens.  (Jazz Quotes) I love Ray Charles. He can still teach everybody a lot about how to make great music. Not necessarily how to make hits, but how to make great music. Of course, part of it is his incredible talent. Who are the greatest jazz singers in the world? Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Ray Charles.  (Jazz Quotes) The summer before my third year of law school, I worked at a law firm in Washington, D.C. I turned 25 that July, and on my birthday, my father happened to be playing in a local jazz club called Pigfoot and invited me to join him. I hadn’t spent a birthday with him since I was 3, but I agreed.  (Jazz Quotes) I’ve always loved black culture; I don’t know any other way to put it. Since I was a kid I loved music and early jazz, Sly and the Family Stone.  (Jazz Quotes) People who don’t do jazz think it’s black magic. But really, it’s just a matter of getting used to it. It’s fun to gamble. The trick is not to fall back on the things you’ve done before.  (Jazz Quotes) Kansas City, I would say, did more for jazz music, black music, than any other influence at all. Almost all their joints that they had there, they used black bands. Most musicians who amounted to anything, they would flock to Kansas City because that’s the place where jobs were plentiful.  (Jazz Quotes) To most white people, jazz means black and jazz means dirt, and that’s not what I play. I play black classical music.  (Jazz Quotes) During our first meeting, Tony Iommi was a great jazz guitarist, his capabilities cover all styles - Black Sabbath has even narrowed his horizons.  (Jazz Quotes) The guitar is such an incredible instrument; it plays classical, flamenco, jazz, country, bluegrass, rock, acid, blues. You’ll never see a clarinet playing Black Sabbath. But you will see a guitar in a clarinet band playing rhythm. It is the most popular instrument in the world; it is the one everybody loves.  (Jazz Quotes) T was in a blue mood , his open reflections on the isloation of his life floating like Jazz notes under a pink moon  (Jazz Quotes) When I was very young, there was a lot of music at home, mostly jazz. I was walking around singing and pretending I was in bands from a very young age. But the first song that was really personal to me was ‘Blue Suede Shoes’.  (Jazz Quotes) The jazz and blues clubs are like the jazz and blues musicians - they’re disappearing  (Jazz Quotes) My primary influences were the best jazz players from the 50’s and 60’s and later some of the pop people from the same time period along with the better of the well-known blues musicians.  (Jazz Quotes) That’s the kind of musical freedom I like: jazz, rock, blues, anything. You adopt different attitudes when you play different music.  (Jazz Quotes) In my teenage years I was as addicted to great pop as I was to free jazz, electronic music, and hardcore blues.  (Jazz Quotes) I use rock and jazz and blues rhythms because I love that music. I hope my poetry has a relationship with good-time rock’n roll.  (Jazz Quotes) Jazz celebrates older generations and not just the youth movement. When you ‘sell’ only to people of a certain age, you get cut off from the main body of experience.  (Jazz Quotes) I read every book there was on jazz, about the original players - King Oliver, Buddy Bolden and all those groups. At one time I was fairly well schooled in that... I could tell you who played where and when, historically, way before my time.  (Jazz Quotes) I was a total music nerd. I grew up on Perry Street in the 80s. My father wrote books about jazz, so I was always at the ‘Village Vanguard.’  (Jazz Quotes)
