Text Quotes
When I was 12, I was doing competitive jazz, tap and ballet in Michigan. The studio put the best dancers together, and I joined that. We always did really, really well in local competitions.  (Jazz Quotes) There’s a richness to the old works if you look before the 1950s. The chord progressions and the language was more complicated, especially in the jazz and classical world.  (Jazz Quotes) So many people report to be contemporary dancers, and they’re not. They are sort of jazz dancers that feel like they’re throwing a bit of classical in there. I mean, a true contemporary dancer has got ballet as their base and classical ballet, and that is their base. And then they choose to extemporize on that and go into a contemporary world.  (Jazz Quotes) My dad was a huge big band and jazz fan, and we both sort of enjoyed be-bop, but man, it required so much skill to play it. And then there was cool jazz, the era that Miles, Coltrane, and Ornette ushered in, and that found a home in me. It turns out that that music was just really where I breathed.  (Jazz Quotes) I grew up listening to hipster jazz and classical records... we went and watched ballet and orchestras - lots of cool stuff. Which I’m really grateful for - it’s pretty nice being introduced to that when you’re little.  (Jazz Quotes) Cicadas, buckling and unbuckling their stomach muscles, yield the sound of someone sharpening scissors. Fall field crickets, the thermometer hounds, add high-pitched tinkling chirps to the jazz, and their call quickens with warm weather, slows again with cool.  (Jazz Quotes) You know you’re a hopeless record nerd when your time travel fantasies always come around to how cool it would be to go back to 1973 and buy all the great funk and jazz and salsa records that came out that year on tiny obscure labels and are now really rare and expensive.  (Jazz Quotes) Jazz musicians are the coolest people on the planet. Can I have some cool?  (Jazz Quotes) Something bright and alien flashed across the sky... and for a moment people set down their glasses in country clubs and speakeasies and thought of their old best dreams. Maybe there was a way out by flying, maybe our restless blood could find frontiers in the illimitable air. But by that time we were all pretty well committed; and the Jazz Age continued; we would all have one more.  (Jazz Quotes) I’m not really a country singer, although I did make a couple albums and love its simple, straight-from-the-heart approach, but I have always sung a lot of jazz, show tunes, pop tunes, gospel and blues.  (Jazz Quotes) When I started recording, I thought I’d be able to do all kinds of records: jazz, country, dance - and I’ve always wanted to do a gospel album.  (Jazz Quotes) I’m a big fan of gospel music, and you cannot be a fan of rock and roll, you cannot be a fan of country western music, and you can’t really be a fan of jazz without listening to a lot of music that’s religious.  (Jazz Quotes) I’m not a jazz singer, blues singer or country singer. I’m a singer that can sing rhythm and blues, that can sing jazz, that can sing country. There’s a big difference. In other words, I’m not a specialist.  (Jazz Quotes) The jazz chord substitutions in a country song... that was another thing that bent people’s ears. I guess that my favorites are the unique ones. It’s not how fast you play. It’s that unique blending of different stuff I’m most proud of.  (Jazz Quotes) If he’s a true symphony artist, he knows better than that because he knows that the only truly creative musician is the jazz musician.  (Jazz Quotes) In elementary school, in my lunchbox, I used to pack a saxophone. I could have been a chef, a culinary artist, and all that jazz.  (Jazz Quotes) I was really creative. I started to dance very young. I loved to dance. I begged my mother to put me into dance classes, and finally, in third grade, she did. Tap and jazz, but not ballet.  (Jazz Quotes) Mum left school at 15, and after a few years of modelling and dating jazz musicians, was married by 21 to my father, Mike Taylor, a journalist on the ‘Daily Mirror.’ They had my brother and me pretty quickly and had split up by the time I was two. I don’t really have any memories of them as a couple.  (Jazz Quotes) [David] Bowie’s last album Blackstar featured him backed by a jazz quartet  (Jazz Quotes) [David] Bowie went on to make best-selling music - funk, dance music, electronic music, while also being influenced by cabaret and jazz.  (Jazz Quotes) What I believe to be jazz is constructed and improvised music which is in the air right now. But I don’t think that’s most people’s definition of jazz, you know? We don’t know what we’re talking about, because we don’t know the definition.  (Jazz Quotes) It’s always difficult to define what jazz is or what jazz isn’t. To me, the only definition that I can think of is it’s music where a lot of different elements are played at the same time. The harmonic, the melodic... You’re pushing the boundaries on every level. That could be true of rhythm and blues as well. I’m a musician.  (Jazz Quotes) I’ve often cringed when I heard myself described as a jazz singer. I’ve always thought of myself as a jazz vocalist.  (Jazz Quotes) I have specific playlists for arrivals in different cities. Tokyo skews new wave, Paris more jazz, and New York is Top 40.  (Jazz Quotes) I think jazz is a beautiful, democratic music. It encourages musicians with very strong, and many times, very different points of view to work together as a team while, at the same time, giving them the space to express their individuality. It’s a very important art form and can be used as a model for different cultures to work together.  (Jazz Quotes) I’ve mainly been sampling jazz because the tone of the chords are expressive in itself, so it’s quite nice to write over. It’s got interpretations of a lot of different genres, too, a lot of dubby-ness and experimental stuff.  (Jazz Quotes) I made a good living for a teenager. And I had to learn all different kinds of music - jazz, swing, Motown, pop - and that inspired what kind of music I started to write.  (Jazz Quotes) In some ways, jazz is the most precise of art forms and the loosest in the sense that it’s all about improvisation, but the musicianship required is kind of insane. To actually play with real jazz musicians is a different level of musicianship that almost has no equal in any other form of music in the world.  (Jazz Quotes) I played saxophone, so I was into jazz. I learned from each audience and each teacher that I had. I can’t really tell you any rules or anything, but the way I develop my beliefs is really just by personally learning from different situations.  (Jazz Quotes) I used to hang out a lot in jazz clubs, and the groups took to a kid like me who wasn’t afraid to get up and sing with a jazz band. Then I started to hang out in rock clubs and learned to carry off different styles.  (Jazz Quotes)
