Since casting directors in L.A. lacked a preconceived notion of me, I was able to reinvent my type a bit, which was essential in booking the role of Amanda on ‘Ugly Betty.’ I don’t believe I would have auditioned for that role in N.Y  (La Quotes) I wanted to find something I was passionate about, something with the possibility of upward movement, and I wanted freedom. My 5-year-old goes to two schools, which I was worried about, but it ended up being an amazing, self-esteem-building experience for her. She celebrates it  (La Quotes) I graduated from a place called Whitworth College in Spokane with a theater degree, then in 1993 I moved to L.A. and auditioned and did very well there. My first gig was playing a skinhead in John Singleton’s ‘Higher Learning’, and I played Glenn Close’s son in a TV movie called ‘Serving In Silence.’  (La Quotes) Sunscreen is my number 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 tip. I’m a fanatic, partially because I live in L.A. and have fair skin and freckles, and partially because of my kids. My mom always made me wear sunscreen and I’m trying to be that mom for them  (La Quotes) I always thought Broadway’s the goal, and then I moved out to L.A. with ‘Wicked’ and started doing guest-star spots and little recurring things, and I was like, ‘Well, this is pretty great; I’m kind of digging this.’  (La Quotes) I moved back to Idaho when I was 6 or 7 and then lived in a little town called Twin Falls and then moved to Boise. So quite different from L.A. I’d been to Disneyland a couple of times, and that was the closest I’d been to L.A  (La Quotes) I always have scarves handy; they’re my indulgence. I buy them at an L.A. shop called Lost and Found. I’ll spray one with loads of my Byredo Gypsy Water perfume, put it on and be like, ‘Ah, this feels good.’  (La Quotes) L.A. prides itself on newness or being the last frontier or just not liking old things and tearing them down to build new things. I always say it’s home - Texas is home. I’ve been out in L.A. a little over ten years, and I still get so excited when I go back home. It just feels comfortable; it makes me smile  (La Quotes) I came to L.A. for pilot season, and it was so brutal. So brutal. But still, I just want to be making forward progress. There’s lots of ideas about being a superstar. But my idea of being a superstar is just going forward and having new challenges and trying out new things  (La Quotes) I think I’ve always been kept grounded. I’ve never been too involved with the movie business apart from just doing the film. I’ve never moved out to LA like a lot of people or been too drawn in by that  (La Quotes) Apart from The Holiday, I haven’t really spent a huge amount of time in LA.
