Text Quotes
A most important, but also most elusive, aspect of any tool is its influence on the habits of those who train themselves in its use. If the tool is a programming language this influence is, whether we like it or not, an influence on our thinking habits... A programming language is a tool that has profound influence on our thinking habits  (Language Quotes) We think only through the medium of words. Languages are true analytical methods. Algebra, which is adapted to its purpose in every species of expression, in the most simple, most exact, and best manner possible, is at the same time a language and an analytical method. The art of reasoning is nothing more than a language well arranged  (Language Quotes) A programming language is like a natural, human language in that it favors certain methaphors, images, and ways of thinking  (Language Quotes) A language that doesn’t affect the way you think about programming is not worth knowing  (Language Quotes) Mathematics is a language. We want scientists to be able to read it, speak it, and write it. But we are are not training them to be grammarians  (Language Quotes) When we use a language, we should commit ourselves to knowing it, being able to read it, and writing it idiomatically  (Language Quotes) Between two beings there is always the barrier of words. Man has so many ears and speaks so many languages. Should it nevertheless be possible to understand one another? Is real communication possible if word and language betray us every time? Shall, in the end, only the language of tanks and guns prevail and not human reason and understanding?  (Language Quotes) In my games I have sometimes found a combination intuitively simply feeling that it must be there. Yet I was not able to translate my thought processes into normal human language  (Language Quotes) Moreover, metaphor is typically viewed as characteristic of language alone, a matter of words rather than thought or action. For this reason, most people think they can get along perfectly well without metaphor. We have found, on the contrary, that metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action. Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature  (Language Quotes) It is intended to signify a coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves. The objectives of such a plan would be the disintegration of the political and social institutions, of culture, language, national feelings, religion, and the economic existence of national groups, and the destruction of the personal security, liberty, health, dignity, and even the lives of the individuals belonging to such groups  (Language Quotes) Music is that great language where a lot can be said and little can be proven  (Language Quotes) Each routine you read turns out to be pretty much what you expected. You can call it beautiful code when the code also makes it look like the language was made for the problem  (Language Quotes) I know ours is a world made by men for men, their dictatorship is so ancient it even extends to language  (Language Quotes) We didn’t say anything because there was such an awful lot to say, and no language to say it in  (Language Quotes) Only as the written text began to speak would the voices of the forest, and of the river, begin to fade. And only then would language loosen its ancient association with the invisible breath, the spirit sever itself from the wind, the psyche dissociate itself from the environing air  (Language Quotes) The telling of stories, like singing and praying, would seem to be an almost ceremonial act, an ancient and necessary mode of speech that tends the earthly rootedness of human language. For narrated events always happen somewhere. And for an oral culture, that location is never merely incidental to those occurrences. The events belong, as it were, to the place, and to tell the story of those events is to let the place itself speak through the telling  (Language Quotes) In the absence of any written analogue to speech, the sensible, natural environment remains the primary visual counterpart of spoken utterance, the palpable site, or matrix wherein meaning occurs and proliferates. In the absence of writing, we find ourselves situated in the field of discourse as we are embedded in the natural landscape; indeed, the two matrices are not separable. We can no more stabilize the language and render its meanings determinate than we can freeze all motion and metamorphosis within the land  (Language Quotes) Words, do not have twins in every language. Sometimes they only have distant cousins, and sometimes they pretend that they are not even related  (Language Quotes) One is almost tempted to say that the language itself is a mythology deprived of its vitality, a bloodless mythology so to speak, which has only preserved in a formal and abstract form what mythology contains in living and concrete form  (Language Quotes) Women’s body language speaks eloquently, though silently, of her subordinate status in a hierarchy of gender  (Language Quotes) He was feeling totally lost, leaving his family and country for a place where he knew nobody and didn’t even speak the language  (Language Quotes) Any fifth language that you use should be equally used as just another bit of theater language, so that if you have a strong text, then the light should be as strongly part of that text as, for example, the sound it should be or whatever it is that you see  (Language Quotes) Television excites me because it seems to be the last stamping ground of poetry, the last place where I hear women’s hair rhapsodically described, women’s faces acclaimed in odelike language  (Language Quotes) People who cannot distinguish between good and bad language, or who regard the distinction as unimportant, are unlikely to think carefully about anything else  (Language Quotes) We’re very concerned with language and how language works. We’re trying to engage people rather than dictate how they should be thinking  (Language Quotes) One of the great skills in using any language is knowing what not to use, what not to say. There’s that simplicity thing again  (Language Quotes) In design man becomes what he is. Animals have language and perception as well, but they do not design  (Language Quotes) And imagine acquiring a new language and only learning the words to describe a wonderful world, refusing to know the words for a bleak one and in doing so linguistically shaping the world that you inhabit  (Language Quotes) Language is not simply a reporting device for experience but a defining framework for it. So if, from perhaps some unhealthy desire for sympathetic support, you describe your life in negative terms you will find that this will reinforce your mind’s negative emotions and make you unhappy and even more susceptible to feeling unhappy in the future. By simply doing the reverse and focusing on why you are lucky and grateful things are not worse, you will strengthen and increase your mind’s positive emotions and make yourself happy and even more likely to feel happy in the future  (Language Quotes) Other animals can make sounds, and sounds can indicate pleasure and pain. But language, a distinctly human capacity, isn´t just for registering pleasure and pain. It´s about declaring what is just and what is unjust, and distinguishing right from wrong. We don´t grasp these things silently, and then put words to them; language is the medium through which we discern and deliberate about the good  (Language Quotes)
