Text Quotes
The beauty of literature is you allow readers to see things through other peoples eyes. All good books do this  (Literature Quotes) I cannot sufficiently celebrate the glorious liberty that reigns in the public libraries of the twentieth century as compared with the intolerable management of those of the nineteenth century, in which the books were jealously railed away from the people, and obtainable only at an expenditure of time and red tape calculated to discourage any ordinary taste for literature  (Literature Quotes) For me, filmmaking combines everything. That’s the reason I’ve made cinema my life’s work. In films, painting and literature, theatre and music come together. But a film is still a film  (Literature Quotes) In literature only trouble is interesting. It takes trouble to turn the great themes of life into a story: birth, love, sex, work, and death  (Literature Quotes) War destroys. War obliterates. War is ruination. And war begets more war. After thousands of years of experience proving this, and reams of literature and countless works of art exposing it, when are people going to learn?  (Literature Quotes) No literature is richer than that of the sea. No story is more enthralling, no tradition is more secure  (Literature Quotes) The trouble with radicals is that they only read radical literature, and the trouble with conservatives is that they don’t read anything  (Literature Quotes) Typography is to literature as musical performance is to composition: an essential act of interpretation, full of endless opportunities for insight or obtuseness  (Literature Quotes) The cinema, as literature, as all the plastic arts, do not exist outside of a critical system that allows us to study them  (Literature Quotes) For me, there was no great myth around the movies when I was a young child. My father was very simple about the whole thing. He did not consider cinema an art. Cinema was entertainment. Literature and music were art  (Literature Quotes) Real literature is something much better than a harmless instrument for getting through idle hours. The purpose of great literature is to help us to develop into full human beings  (Literature Quotes) In order to have a literature, a nation must live, not merely on the practical, but on the moral and spiritual plane as well, contributing through its national life to the development of some side of the universal spirit of man  (Literature Quotes) Literature is love. I think it went like this: drawings in the cave, sounds in the cave, songs in the cave, songs about us. Later, stories about us. Part of what we always did was have sex and fight about it and break each other’s hearts. I guess there’s other kinds of love too. Great friendships. Working together. But poetry and novels are lists of our devotions. We love the feel of making the marks as the feelings are rising and falling. Living in literature and love is the best thing there is. You’re always home  (Literature Quotes) There is absolutely no single aspect of one’s personality that is more important to develop than empathy, which is not a skill at which men typically are asked to excel. I believe empathy is not only the core of art, literature and music, but should also be at the core of society, from ethics to economics  (Literature Quotes) How I envy those clerks who go by to their offices in the morning! There’s the day’s work cut out for them; no question of mood and feeling; they have just to work at something, and when the evening comes, they have earned their wages, and they are free to rest and enjoy themselves. What an insane thing it is to make literature one’s only means of support! When the most trivial accident may at any time prove fatal to one’s power of work for weeks or months. No, that is the unpardonable sin! To make a trade of an art! I am rightly served for attempting such a brutal folly  (Literature Quotes) I detest literature. I abominate the theatre. I have a horror of culture. I am only interested in magic!  (Literature Quotes) Literature is not a picture of life, but is a separate experience with its own kind of flow and enhancement  (Literature Quotes) I wanted to write literature that pushed people into their lives rather than helping people escape from them  (Literature Quotes) Literature professes to be important while at the same time considering itself an object of doubt. It confirms itself as it disparages itself. It seeks itself: this is more than it has a right to do, because literature may be one of those things which deserve to be found but not to be sought  (Literature Quotes) I’m just a storyteller, and the cinema happens to be my medium. I like it because it recreates life in movement, enlarges it, enhances it, distills it. For me, it’s far closer to the miraculous creation of life than, say, a painting or music or even literature. It’s not just an art form; it’s actually a new form of life, with its own rhythms, cadences, perspectives and transparencies. It’s my way of telling a story  (Literature Quotes) The central function of imaginative literature is to make you realize that other people act on moral convictions different from your own  (Literature Quotes) Explain to me, please, why in our literature and art so often people absolutely incompetent in this field have the final word  (Literature Quotes) With the enormous and steady increase in the volume of our literature, we must rely more and more upon sympathetic selection, judicious editing, and the indexer who knows where to exercise discretion. Any simpleton can write a book, but it requires high skill to make an index  (Literature Quotes) We need literature because we wouldn’t fully know ourselves without it. We need good literature to be fully human  (Literature Quotes) Like works of literature, mathematical ideas help expand our circle of empathy, liberating us from the tyranny of a single, parochial point of view. Numbers, properly considered, make us better people  (Literature Quotes) I think the genre of comics sometimes overtakes the medium, and people assume that they are kind of frivolous. If you have a good, strong story teller, they can be as affecting as any character in literature. Period  (Literature Quotes) I ask of literature precisely those things of which I feel the lack in my own life  (Literature Quotes) Although random mutations influenced the course of evolution, their influence was mainly by loss, alteration, and refinement... Never, however, did that one mutation make a wing, a fruit, a woody stem, or a claw appear. Mutations, in summary, tend to induce sickness, death, or deficiencies. No evidence in the vast literature of heredity changes shows unambiguous evidence that random mutation itself, even with geographical isolation of populations, leads to speciation  (Literature Quotes) In life there are two things which are dependable. The pleasures of the flesh and the pleasures of literature  (Literature Quotes) It’s not rocket science. It’s social science – the science of understanding people’s needs and their unique relationship with art, literature, history, music, work, philosophy, community, technology and psychology. The act of design is structuring and creating that balance  (Literature Quotes)
