Text Quotes
Myths are stories that express meaning, morality or motivation. Whether they are true or not is irrelevant  (Myths Quotes) For most of the history of our species we were helpless to understand how nature works. We took every storm, drought, illness and comet personally. We created myths and spirits in an attempt to explain the patterns of nature  (Myths Quotes) Myths grow all the time. If I was to listen to the number of times I’ve thrown teacups then we’ve gone through some crockery in this place. It’s completely exaggerated, but I don’t like people arguing back with me  (Myths Quotes) All myths that are something more than fancies gain rather than lose in value with time, by reason of the accretions of human experience  (Myths Quotes) We must not be hampered by yesterday’s myths in concentrating on today’s needs  (Myths Quotes) Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fantasies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after years relieved of them  (Myths Quotes) The myths connected with individual sanctuaries and ceremonies were merely part of the apparatus of the worship; they served to excite the fancy and sustain the interest of the worshipper... no one cared what he believed about its origin  (Myths Quotes) It is not enough for journalists to see themselves as mere messengers without understanding the hidden agendas of the message and the myths that surround it  (Myths Quotes) There are a lot of myths about my injuries. They say I have broken every bone in my body. Not true. But I have broken 35 bones. I had surgery 14 times to pin and plate. I shattered my pelvis. I forget all of the things that have broke  (Myths Quotes) It is a sure sign that a culture has reached a dead end when it is no longer intrigued by its myths  (Myths Quotes) All minorities think they’re immune, but we’re absolutely part of the one in five that gets skin cancer! It’s a myth, and myths are meant to be debunked!  (Myths Quotes) If the equality of individuals and the dignity of man be myths, they are myths to which the republic is committed  (Myths Quotes) Fiction isn’t made by scraping the bones of topicality for the last shreds and sinews, to be processed into mechanically recovered prose. Like journalism, it deals in ideas as well as facts, but also in metaphors, symbols and myths  (Myths Quotes) I’m a big fan of the misunderstood, the vilified, the underdog, the breaking of myths  (Myths Quotes) For what are myths if not the imposing of order on phenomena that do not possess order in themselves? And all myths, however they differ from philosophical systems and scientific theories, share this with them, that they negate the principle of randomness in the world  (Myths Quotes) I’ve always thought of wholeness and integration as necessary myths. We’re gragmented beings who cement ourselves together, but there are always cracks. Living with the cracks is part of being, well, reasonably healthy  (Myths Quotes) The truth about an animal is far more exciting and altogether more beautiful than all the myths woven about it  (Myths Quotes) I don’t know how you perceive my mission as a writer, but for me it is not a responsibility to reaffirm your concretized myths and provincial prejudices. It is not my job to lull you with a false sense of the rightness of the universe. This wonderful and terrible occupation of recreating the world in a different way, each time fresh and strange, is an act of revolutionary guerrilla warfare. I stir the soup. I inconvenience you. I make your nose run and your eyeballs water  (Myths Quotes) As a society, you were unwilling to reflect upon the shared pain that united you with those who attacked you. You retreated into myths of your own difference, assumptions of your own superiority. And you acted out these beliefs on the stage of the world, so that the entire planet was rocked by the repercussions of your tantrums, not least my family, now facing war thousands of miles away  (Myths Quotes) ... Fan fiction is a way of the culture repairing the damage done in a system where contemporary myths are owned by corporations instead of owned by the folk  (Myths Quotes) It has been said that the myth is a public dream, dreams are private myths. Unfortunately we give our mythic side scant attention these days. As a result, a great deal escapes us and we no longer understand our own actions. So it remains important and salutary to speak not only of the rational and easily understood, but also of enigmatic things: the irrational and the ambiguous. To speak both privately and publicly  (Myths Quotes) Scientific theories tell us what is possible; myths tell us what is desirable. Both are needed to guide proper action  (Myths Quotes) The scientific doctrine of progress is destined to replace not only the myth of progress, but all other myths of human earthly destiny. It will inevitably become one of the cornerstones of man’s theology, or whatever may be the future substitute for theology, and the most important external support for human ethics  (Myths Quotes) The first part of the spiritual journey should properly be called psychological rather than spiritual because it involves peeling away the myths and illusions that have misinformed us  (Myths Quotes) Myths and science fulfill a similar function: they both provide human beings with a representation of the world and of the forces that are supposed to govern it. They both fix the limits of what is considered as possible  (Myths Quotes) We are not myths of the past, ruins in the jungle, or zoos. We are people and we want to be respected, not to be victims of intolerance and racism  (Myths Quotes) I have decided to tell the story of my life as best I can, so that my children can separate the truth from the myths that others have created about me, as myths are created about everyone swept up in the turbulent and distorting maelstrom of celebrity in our culture  (Myths Quotes) We need myths to get by. We need story; otherwise the tremendous randomness of experience overwhelms us. Story is what penetrates  (Myths Quotes) By means of our myths and legends we maintain a sense of what we are worth and who we are. Without them we should undoubtedly go mad  (Myths Quotes) If we trace the history of any nation backwards into the past, we come at last to a period of myths and traditions which eventually fade away into impenetrable darkness  (Myths Quotes)
