Text Quotes
I had always planned to make a large painting of the early spring, when the first leaves are at the bottom of the trees, and they seem to float in space in a wonderful way. But the arrival of spring can’t be done in one picture  (Painting Quotes) A lot of painters listen to music, I think, while they paint. But I hate to do that. It’s a horror. I can’t really listen to the music. I’m not really concentrating on it, and I’m not really concentrating on the painting  (Painting Quotes) See, a painting is much cheaper than making a film. And photography is, you know, way cheap. So if I get an idea for a film, there are many ways to get it together and go realise that film. There’s really nothing to be afraid of  (Painting Quotes) You get a painting idea, and you go do that. You get a cinema idea, and you go in to do that. The difference is, even though the paintings might take some time to make, with cinema you are booked for a year and a half, minimum  (Painting Quotes) I’m irresponsible to my career in order to paint. Because painting is obsessive. I forget to eat. I forget to sleep  (Painting Quotes) Because I’m so busy and because I think of myself as a painter, I desperately guard the time that I have to paint. And sometimes I’m irresponsible to my career in order to paint. Because painting is obsessive. I forget to eat. I forget to sleep  (Painting Quotes) I have a publishing company of books by me and books of others. It drew people to poetry readings and photo exhibitions and painting exhibitions that I’ve been doing for years before that  (Painting Quotes) It’s a waste of time to think that if you colored a painting red what might have happened if you painted it black  (Painting Quotes) All art began as sacred art, you know? I mean, all painting began as religious painting. All writing began as religious writing  (Painting Quotes) Painting is as close as a person can get to actually capturing the heat of the moment  (Painting Quotes) I’m a storyteller. I love to tell stories about brands. I love to tell stories, period. I like painting pictures through the words, and that’s what I do  (Painting Quotes) Money has lost its narrative quality the way painting did once upon a time. Money is talking to itself  (Painting Quotes) People are fond of using military terms to describe what they do. We call it bombing when we go out painting, when of course it’s more like entertaining the troops in a neutral zone, during peacetime in a country without an army  (Painting Quotes) Painting something that defies the law of the land is good. Painting something that defies the law of the land and the law of gravity at the same time is ideal  (Painting Quotes) Haven, don’t ask me to define the boundaries of normal. You know how I was raised. My father once struck strands of his own pubic hair onto a painting and sold it for a million dollars  (Painting Quotes) Remember crime against property is not real crime. People look at an oil painting and admire the use of brushstrokes to convey meaning. People look at a graffiti painting and admire the use of a drainpipe to gain access  (Painting Quotes) It was a miserable machine, an inefficient machine, she thought, the human apparatus for painting or for feeling; it always broke down at the critical moment; heroically, one must force it on  (Painting Quotes) American poetry, like American painting, is always personal with an emphasis on the individuality of the poet  (Painting Quotes) To an untrained eye, need and love were as easily mistaken for each other as the real master’s painting and a forgery  (Painting Quotes) When I write, I disturb. When I show a film, I disturb. When I exhibit my painting, I disturb, and I disturb if I don’t. I have a knack for disturbing  (Painting Quotes) We were painting by numbers, starting with the greens. Because that happened to be our favorite color. And this, we figured, had to mean something  (Painting Quotes) When I encounter a sunrise, a painting, a woman, or an idea that makes my heart bound like a young calf, then I know I am standing in front of happiness  (Painting Quotes) When I say be creative I don’t mean that you should all go and become great painters and great poets. I simply mean let your life be a painting, let your life be a poem  (Painting Quotes) And if I have any advice to give to anybody it’s this: take up watercolor painting  (Painting Quotes) Painting is marvelous; it makes you happier and more patient. Afterwards you do not have black fingers as with writing, but blue and red ones  (Painting Quotes) Laying out grounds may be considered a liberal art, in some sort like poetry and painting  (Painting Quotes) Fatherhood is the best thing I ever did. It changes your perspective. You can write a book, you can make a movie, you can paint a painting, but having kids is really the most extraordinary thing I have taken on  (Painting Quotes) All painting, no matter what you are painting, is abstract in that it’s got to be organized  (Painting Quotes) Painting, like any art, comprises a technique, a workmanlike handling of material, but the accuracy of a tone and the fictitious combination of effects depend entirely on the choice made by the artist  (Painting Quotes) Often when I write I am trying to make words do the work of line and color. I have the painter’s sensitivity to light. Much of my writing is verbal painting  (Painting Quotes)
