Text Quotes
Such a small, pure object a poem could be, made of nothing but air a tiny string of letters, maybe small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. But it could blow everybody’s head off  (Poem Quotes) Every poem holds the unspeakable inside it. The unsayable... The thing that you can’t really say because it’s too complicated. It’s too complex for us. Every poem has that silence deep in the center of it  (Poem Quotes) Lord, let me write, leave me autistic and typing until my windows bust into a thousand silver doves and I know the poem is done  (Poem Quotes) I always see nice images like that but I don’t know what to do with them. I guess you share them with someone. Or you write them down in a poem. I had so many of those little images, but I never shared them or wrote any of them down  (Poem Quotes) One must write poetry in such as way that if one threw the poem in a window, the pane would break  (Poem Quotes) I’ve written this poem before but always through a window, never through an open door  (Poem Quotes) Take a step, breathe in the world, give it out again in story, poem, song, art  (Poem Quotes) That night when you kissed me, I left a poem in your mouth, and you can hear some of the lines every time you breathe out  (Poem Quotes) The art has to make it on its own, without explanations, and it’s the same for poetry. If the poem or the painting has to be explained, then it’s a failure in communication  (Poem Quotes) Good poetry and successful revolution change our lives. And you cannot compose a good poem or wage a revolution without changing consciousness unless you attack the language that you share with your enemies and invent a language that you share with your allies  (Poem Quotes) It is probably no exaggeration to suppose that in order to improve such an organ as the eye at all, it must be improved in ten different ways at once. And the improbability of any complex organ being produced and brought to perfection in any such way is an improbability of the same kind and degree as that of producing a poem or a mathematical demonstration by throwing letters at random on a table  (Poem Quotes) The field is a halfway house, halfway between the detail of those intimately known places and the ignorance of a landscape view... The essence of a field is that the cultural accommodates the natural there. The human being makes room for and makes use of those organisms that are not him. In that way the field is a poem to symbiosis, and a human contract with the natural  (Poem Quotes) I felt a longing to compose a radical or root poem that would speak to what has its back turned to me  (Poem Quotes) I often think of a poem as a door that opens into a room where I want to go  (Poem Quotes) So I realized when I was successful in a piece, it was because I didn’t abandon a notion early on what it ought to be, and I let it take me along. So I’ve had songs that started out as being about the environment and ended up being love songs and love songs that ended up being about the environment. I’ve had things that I thought would be a poem and realized that it was just too big for that. I’ve got to do something larger and it became a play. I wrote one poem that started a whole play  (Poem Quotes) What’s interesting about songs where the writer is genuinely in love with words is that it’s easy to read the lyrics like a poem  (Poem Quotes) Calligraphy may well be simply an artistic version of another form, that is the ideograms which make up the poem, but then not only does it reflect the character and temperament of the artist but... also betrays his heart rate, his breathing  (Poem Quotes) Everyday begins like a blank chalkboard, on which each one of us can write the poem of our present and our dreams for the future  (Poem Quotes) A poem is like a child; at some point we have to let it go and trust that it will make its own way in the world  (Poem Quotes) I believed that I wanted to be a poet, but deep down I wanted to be a poem  (Poem Quotes) A poem is a place where the conditions of beyondness and withinness are made palpable, where to imagine is to feel what it is to be. It allows us to have the life we are denied because we are too busy living. Even more paradoxically, poetry permits us to live in ourselves as if we were just out of reach of ourselves  (Poem Quotes) A poem is not an expression, nor is it an object. Yet it somewhat partakes of both. What a poem is is never to be known, for which I have learned to be grateful  (Poem Quotes) When you’re really caught up in writing a poem, it can be a form of prayer. I’m not very good at praying, but what I experience when I’m writing a poem is close to prayer. I feel it in different degrees and not with every poem. But in certain ways writing is a form of prayer  (Poem Quotes) Poetry is my understanding with the world, my intimacy with things, my participation in what is real, my engagement with voices and images. This is why a poem speaks not of ideal life but of actual life: the angle of a window; the reverberation of streets, cities, rooms; shadows along a wall  (Poem Quotes) Don’t you think every face tells its own story? Like a book? More like a poem. If you study it long enough, you’ll soon find its meaning  (Poem Quotes) A poem is really a kind of machine for producing the poetic state by means of words  (Poem Quotes) To begin with, I wanted that truth to life to possess a concrete reliability, and rejoiced most when the poem seemed most direct, an upfront representation of the world it stood in for or stood up for or stood its ground against  (Poem Quotes) Because a poem is not written while running or while answering the phone. It’s written in whatever minutes one has. Sometimes you have half an hour  (Poem Quotes) What philosophy worthy of the name has truly been able to avoid the link between poem and theorem?  (Poem Quotes) The painting rises from the brushstrokes as a poem rises from the words. The meaning comes later  (Poem Quotes)
