Text Quotes
Poetry saves what is human in this world going gaudy and insane. In exploring small truths, something larger might turn up, adding dimension, insight, vision, recognition to our lives. We just might be more complete, more aware after a poem  (Poem Quotes) A poem is like a wine glass in which you can hold up a little bit of reality and taste it  (Poem Quotes) I am convinced that the first lyric poem was written at night, and that the moon was witness to the event and that the event was witness to the moon. For me, the moon has always been the very embodiment of lyric poetry  (Poem Quotes) Poetry is sentimental to begin with. To write a sentimental poem is an act of redundancy  (Poem Quotes) Historically, there are hierarchies of purity. Certain aspects of poetry are very, very pure. The lyric poem can’t be anything but the lyric poem  (Poem Quotes) Poetry feels like a country I visit without a passport, where I look around furtively, grab hold of something precious, and try to smuggle it back across the border. Any poem I get written down feels like contraband to me  (Poem Quotes) I believe that poets have to be inside their poems somewhere, or the poem won’t work  (Poem Quotes) When a poem says something that could not have been said in any other way, in music, prose, sculpture, movement or paint, then it is poetry  (Poem Quotes) When I have worries, fears or a love affair, I have the luck of being able to transform it into a poem  (Poem Quotes) I accept all interpretations of my films. The only reality is before the camera. Each film I make is kind of a return to poetry for me, or at least an attempt to create a poem  (Poem Quotes) Every poem that I write is, in a sense, trying to find adequate words for this unspeakable word, around which my entire life turns  (Poem Quotes) Form is any aspect of a poem that encourages it to stay whole and not drift off into chaos  (Poem Quotes) For me, the short story is the depth of a novel, the breadth of a poem, and, as you come to the last few paragraphs, the experience of surprise  (Poem Quotes) For me, a painting must give off sparks. It must dazzle like the beauty of a woman or a poem  (Poem Quotes) What characterizes a poem is its necessary dependence on words as much as its struggle to transcend them  (Poem Quotes) The poem is not only the point of origin for all the language and narrative arts, the poem returns us to the very social function of art as such  (Poem Quotes) To do a poem justice, explain what makes it unique; to get a poem noticed, explain what makes it typical  (Poem Quotes) My first poem was a bolt from the blue … it broke a spell of disillusion and suicidal despondence. … it filled me with soul satisfying joy  (Poem Quotes) The poem is lonely. It is lonely and en route. Its author stays with it. Does this very fact not place the poem already here, at its inception, in the encounter, in the mystery of encounter?  (Poem Quotes) A poem is what the reader lives through under the guidance of the text and experiences as relevant to the text  (Poem Quotes) Images are probably the most important part of the poem. First of all you want to tell a story, but images are what are going to shore it up and get to the heart of the matter  (Poem Quotes) In every good poem everything must be both deliberate and instinctive. That is how the poem becomes ideal  (Poem Quotes) Translate a book a dozen times from one language to another, and what becomes of its style? Most books would be worn out and disappear in this ordeal. The pen which wrote it is soon destroyed, but the poem survives  (Poem Quotes) My choices are rejections, since there is no other way, but what I reject is more numerous, denser, more demanding than before. A little poem, a sigh, at the cost of indescribable losses  (Poem Quotes) Let us dismiss, as irrelevant to the poem per se, the circumstance... which, in the first place, gave rise to the intention of composing a poem that should suit at once the popular and the critical taste  (Poem Quotes) This quality becomes important at a time when almost everyone is a poet. And as I said, we live in an age where almost everybody is a poet, but scarcely anyone can write a poem  (Poem Quotes) A poem records emotions and moods that lie beyond normal language, that can only be patched together and hinted at metaphorically  (Poem Quotes) A revolutionary poem will not tell you who or when to kill, what and when to burn, or even how to theorize. It reminds you... where and when and how you are living and might live, it is a wick of desire  (Poem Quotes) I have never started a poem yet whose end I knew. Writing a poem is discovering  (Poem Quotes) Style is not something applied. It is something that permeates. It is of the nature of that in which it is found, whether the poem, the manner of a God, the bearing of a man. It is not a dress  (Poem Quotes)
