Text Quotes
One Christmas I had no money, and so I went home and just, like, wrote a poem; I mean, I didn’t write them, but I just handed out poems as Christmas presents. Like, ‘Here’s a Pablo Neruda poem that really made me think of you.’  (Poems Quotes) I started classical and operatic lessons when I was 8 and become an operatic singer and went to competition. I write my own music. A lot of the songs, growing up, I was into writing dark stories and poems, and one day I started putting melodies to them.  (Poems Quotes) I play with language a great deal in my poems, and I enjoy that. I try to condense language, that is, I try to express complicated but I hope real emotions as simply as possible. But that doesn’t mean the poems are simple, just that they are as truthful as I can make them.  (Poems Quotes) I think of myself as a writer who photographs. Images, for me, can be considered poems, short stories or essays. And I’ve always thought the best place for my photographs was inside books of my own creation.  (Poems Quotes) I always knew that I was tremendously creative. I recited love poems, I wrote stories and I got excellent grades in every subject, except for maths.  (Poems Quotes) A blend of fact and fiction has been used in various forms since the dawn of creative writing, starting with sagas and epic poems.  (Poems Quotes) I think I’m a very good reader of poetry, but obviously, like everybody, I have a set of criteria for reading poems, and I’m not shy about presenting them, so if people ask for my critical response to a poem, I tell them what works and why, and what doesn’t work and why.  (Poems Quotes) I have written in my life many critical poems, but viewed in retrospect, they were merely a human harmless reflection, and not a true likeness of the real society of today.  (Poems Quotes) My poems tend to be more celebratory and lyrical, and the novels so far pretty dark. Poetry doesn’t seem to me to be an appropriate tool for exploring that.  (Poems Quotes) God may reduce you on Judgment Day to tears of shame, reciting by heart the poems you would have written, had your life been good.  (Poems Quotes) Older boys were allowed to beat younger ones at my 15th-century English boarding school, and every boy had to run a five-mile annual steeplechase through the sludge and rain of an October day, as horses do. We wrote poems in dead languages and recited the Lord’s Prayer in Latin every Sunday night.  (Poems Quotes) I do believe that one’s writing life needs to be kept separate from Po-Biz. Personally, I deal with this by not attending too many poetry readings, primarily reading dead poets or poems in translation, reading Poets and Writers only once for grant/contest information before I quickly dispose of it, and not reading Poetry Daily. Ever.  (Poems Quotes) I started writing after the death of my grandfather - memories, poems, etc. It was very personal; for years I did not share my writing with anyone.  (Poems Quotes) I’m happy to stick with my persona. There are themes of love lost and love regained, but the main themes of all poems are basically love and death, and that seems to be the message of poetry.  (Poems Quotes) His novel or book of poems, decent, adequate, arises not from an exercise of style or will, as the poor unfortunate believes, but as the result of an exercise of concealment. There must be many books, many lovely pines, to shield from hungry eyes the book that really matters, the wretched cave of our misfortune, the magic flower of winter!  (Poems Quotes) I started out in life as a poet; I was only writing poetry all through my 20s. It wasn’t until I was about 30 that I got serious about writing prose. While I was writing poems, I would often divert myself by reading detective novels; I liked them.  (Poems Quotes) I don’t work on poems and essays at once. They walk on different legs, speak with different tongues, draw from different parts of the psyche. Their paces are also different.  (Poems Quotes) My youngest son becomes an award-winning nature photographer, and I cannot resist writing poems to his pictures. My daughter loves to cook, though I do not. Yet together, we write a cookbook with fairy tales. And now a second.  (Poems Quotes) The idea is to take the most ordinary things and make them extraordinary, as Gerard Manley Hopkins does in his poems.  (Poems Quotes) In the power and splendor of the universe, inspiration waits for the millions to come. Man has only to strive for it. Poems greater than the Iliad, plays greater than Macbeth, stories more engaging than Don Quixote await their seeker and finder.  (Poems Quotes) Confessional poetry is, to my mind, more slippery than poems that are sloppily autobiographical; I find the confessional mode much more akin to dramatic monologue.  (Poems Quotes) I’ve often said that all poetry is political. This is because real poems deal with a human response to reality and politics is part of reality, history in the making. Even if a poet writes about sitting in a glass house drinking tea, it reflects politics.  (Poems Quotes) There’s one of my new poems actually - is a good example of where my poetry has ended up. My earlier river poetry was more like a cross between Shelley and Dylan Thomas.  (Poems Quotes) As long as I can remember, I’ve been writing - first poems, then stories, and by my early teenage years I was also in love with sailing.  (Poems Quotes) Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky, We fell them down and turn them into paper,That we may record our emptiness.  (Poems Quotes) I see poetry as a path toward new understanding and transformation, and so I’ve looked at specific poems I love, and at poetry’s gestures in the broadest sense, in an effort to feel and learn what they offer from the inside.  (Poems Quotes) Many of my poems try to use a comic element to reach a place that isn’t comic at all. The comic element works as a surprise. It is unexpected and energizing.  (Poems Quotes) Poems don’t have to rhyme. Poems are about beauty and emotion; in other words poems are about feelings.  (Poems Quotes) I think my poems immediately come out of the sensuous and emotional experiences I have  (Poems Quotes) My father read poetry to me, encouraged me to memorize poems. But the writing of it was quite a different thing.  (Poems Quotes)
