Text Quotes
A poem is a place where the conditions of beyondness and withinness are made palpable, where to imagine is to feel what it is to be. It allows us to have the life we are denied because we are too busy living. Even more paradoxically, poetry permits us to live in ourselves as if we were just out of reach of ourselves  (Poetry Quotes) I don’t find any direct statements in life. My poetry imitates or reproduces the way knowledge or awareness come to me, which is by fits and starts and by indirection. I don’t think poetry arranged in neat patterns would reflect that situation. My poetry is disjunct, but then so is life  (Poetry Quotes) You’ll never know that you had all of me. You’ll never know the poetry you’ve stirred in me  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry is my understanding with the world, my intimacy with things, my participation in what is real, my engagement with voices and images. This is why a poem speaks not of ideal life but of actual life: the angle of a window; the reverberation of streets, cities, rooms; shadows along a wall  (Poetry Quotes) The poet is never inspired, because he is the master of that which appears to others as inspiration. He does not wait for inspiration to fall out of the heavens like roasted ortolans. He knows how to hunt... He is never inspired because he is unceasingly inspired, because the powers of poetry are always at his disposition, subjected to his will, submissive to his own activity  (Poetry Quotes) The idea of a detached art, of poetry as a charm which exists only to distract our leisure, is a decadent idea and an unmistakable symptom of our power to castrate  (Poetry Quotes) Fossil bones and footsteps and ruined homes are the solid facts of history, but the surest hints, the most enduring signs, lie in those miniscule genes. For a moment we protect them with our lives, then like relay runners with a baton, we pass them on to be carried by our descendents. There is a poetry in genetics which is more difficult to discern in broken bomes, and genes are the only unbroken living thread that weaves back and forth through all those boneyards  (Poetry Quotes) I don’t understand the whole thrilling verse, but I love the way poetry turns ordinary words into winged things that rise up and soar!  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry is designed to inspire love, and islam is about falling in love with the creator of the universe  (Poetry Quotes) I think... that philosophy has the duty of pointing out the falsity of outworn religious ideas, however estimable they may be as a form of art. We cannot act as if all religion were poetry while the greater part of it still functions in its ancient guise of illicit science and backward morals  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry, plays, novels, music, they are the cry of the human spirit trying to understand itself and make sense of our world  (Poetry Quotes) Yes, I read. I have that absurd habit. I like beautiful poems, moving poetry, and all the beyond of that poetry. I am extraordinarily sensitive to those poor, marvelous words left in our dark night by a few men I never knew  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry begins where language starts: in the shadows and accidents of one person’s life  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry, which is written while no one is looking, is meant to be looked at for all time  (Poetry Quotes) I don’t think the nature of my poetry is satirical or even ironic, I think it’s essentially lyrical but again I don’t know if it’s my position to say what my poetry is like  (Poetry Quotes) You’re trying to take something that can be described in many, many sentences and pages of prose, but you can convert it into a couple lines of poetry and you still get the essence, so it’s that compression. The best code is poetry  (Poetry Quotes) Literature is love. I think it went like this: drawings in the cave, sounds in the cave, songs in the cave, songs about us. Later, stories about us. Part of what we always did was have sex and fight about it and break each other’s hearts. I guess there’s other kinds of love too. Great friendships. Working together. But poetry and novels are lists of our devotions. We love the feel of making the marks as the feelings are rising and falling. Living in literature and love is the best thing there is. You’re always home  (Poetry Quotes) The attempt to divide art and politics is a bourgeois which says good poetry, art, cannot be political, but since everything is … political, even an artist or work that claims not to have any politics is making a political statement by that act  (Poetry Quotes) ... where the Greeks had modesty, we have cant; where they had poetry, we have cant; where they had patriotism, we have cant; where they had anything that exalts, delights, or adorns humanity, we have nothing but cant, cant, cant  (Poetry Quotes) Prose is prose because of what it includes; poetry is poetry because of what it leaves out  (Poetry Quotes) One way poetry connects is across time... Some echo of a writer’s physical experience comes into us when we read her poem  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry holds the knowledge that we are alive and that we know we’re going to die  (Poetry Quotes) Reading poetry and watching cricket were the sum of my world, and the two are not so far apart as many aesthetes might believe  (Poetry Quotes) If our goal is to write poetry, the only way we are likely to be any good is to try to be as great as the best  (Poetry Quotes) Look to the past to help create the future. Look to science and to poetry. Combine innovation and interpretation. We need the best of both. And it is universities that best provide them  (Poetry Quotes) Prose is not to be read aloud but to oneself alone at night, and it is not quick as poetry but rather a gathering web of insinuations... Prose should be a long intimacy between strangers with no direct appeal to what both may have known. It should slowly appeal to feelings unexpressed, it should in the end draw tears out of the stone  (Poetry Quotes) I’m not against sentimentality. I think you need it. I mean, I don’t think you get a true picture of people without it in writing... It’s a kind of poetry, it’s an emotional poetry, and, to bring it back to the literary scene, I don’t think anything is true that doesn’t have it, that doesn’t have poetry in it  (Poetry Quotes) What does it mean when a man falls in love with a radiant face across the room? It may mean that he has some soul work to do. His soul is the issue. Instead of pursuing the woman and trying to get her alone, away from her husband, he needs to go alone himself, perhaps to a mountain cabin, for three months, write poetry, canoe down a river, and dream. That would save some women a lot of trouble  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry is ultimately mythology, the telling of stories of the soul. The old myths, the old gods, the old heroes have never died. They are only sleeping at the bottom of our minds, waiting for our call. We have need of them, for in their sum they epitomize the wisdom and experience of the race  (Poetry Quotes) I would feel dead if I didn’t have the ability periodically to put my world in order with a poem. I think to be inarticulate is a great suffering, and is especially so to anyone who has a certain knack for poetry  (Poetry Quotes)
