Text Quotes
For an American, there’s no automatic place where people love the art of poetry. There’s not a social class that considers poetry its property the way in some countries there’s a snob value to the art.  (Poetry Quotes) Some honor Cummings as the granddaddy of all American innovators in poetry and ascribe to him a diverse progeny that includes virtually any poet who considers the page a field and allows silence to be part of poetry’s expressiveness.  (Poetry Quotes) For most Americans, poetry plays no role in their everyday lives. But also for most Americans, contemporary painting or jazz or sculpture play no role either. I’m not saying poetry is singled out as a special thing to ignore.  (Poetry Quotes) I have always loved American poetry, which is very different from Irish poetry  (Poetry Quotes) American poetry is always about defining oneself individually, claiming one’s right to be different and often to break taboos.  (Poetry Quotes) I still believe in this country, that it can fulfill the destiny Blake and Whitman envisioned. I still believe in American poetry.  (Poetry Quotes) Every American poet feels that the whole responsibility for contemporary poetry has fallen upon his shoulders, that he is a literary aristocracy of one.  (Poetry Quotes) I don’t think American poetry has gotten any better in the past 35 years. Oddly enough, creative writing programs seem to have been good for fiction, and I would not have predicted that.  (Poetry Quotes) Probably the high-watermark of [Bob] Dylan’s career came after he plugged in his guitar (Judas! one fan shouted during a concert) and exploded American poetry, combining Beat aesthetics, psychedelic imagery, collage techniques.  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry is an affair of sanity, of seeing things as they are, to recreate the familar, eternalizing the poet’s own poerception in unique and original verbal form.  (Poetry Quotes) Genius is mainly an affair of energy, and poetry is mainly an affair of genius; therefore a nation whose spirit is characterized by energy may well be imminent in poetry - and we have Shakespeare.  (Poetry Quotes) This is a good time to ask apologists for the Islamic regime, who degrades Islam? Who imposes stoning, forced marriage of underage girls and flogging for not wearing the veil? Do such practices represent Iran’s ancient history and culture, its ethnic and religious diversity? Its centuries of sensual and subversive poetry?  (Poetry Quotes) A mind that is lively and inquiring, compassionate, curious, angry, full of music, full of feeling, is a mind full of possible poetry.  (Poetry Quotes) If you’ve ever been to a poetry slam, you know that the highest scoring emotion is self-righteous indignation: how dare you judge me. So in that way, the poem, ‘What Teachers Make,’ is an absolutely formulaic slam poem designed to allow me to get up on my soap box and say, ‘Let me tell you what really makes me angry.’  (Poetry Quotes) We’re all just animals. That’s all we are, and everything else is just an elaborate justification of our instincts. That’s where music comes from. And romantic poetry. And bad novels.  (Poetry Quotes) Science fiction, outside of poetry, is the only literary field which has no limits, no parameters whatsoever. You can go not only into the future, but into that wonderful place called other, which is simply another universe, another planet, another species.  (Poetry Quotes) Before people complain of the obscurity of modern poetry, they should first examine their consciences and ask themselves with how many people and on how many occasions they have genuinely and profoundly shared some experience with another.  (Poetry Quotes) How fortunate we are to exist in the moneyless economy of poetry! When you take money out of the equation, anything goes and nobody cares. It’s truly free.  (Poetry Quotes) Art is a jealous mistress; and if a man have a genius for painting, poetry, music, architecture or philosophy, he makes a bad husband and an ill provider.  (Poetry Quotes) Architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and poetry, may truly be called the efflorescence of civilised life.  (Poetry Quotes) I see architecture not as Gropius did, as a moral venture, as truth, but as invention, in the same way that poetry or music or painting is invention.  (Poetry Quotes) Our poetry emulates the recent progress in military strategy: Our army’s strength is the foot soldiers.  (Poetry Quotes) I think a lot of America turned to art and culture after Sept. 11. I know the sales of bibles went shooting up, but so did the sales of poetry. I think in a crisis one looks to one’s culture, partially to give validation to why one would want that culture to survive.  (Poetry Quotes) Making of poetry, music, dance and art as culture-making in the service of nation-making. You can find writings that make that purpose for art quite explicit.  (Poetry Quotes) Visual media is the dominant art form in our present day culture, whereas poetry is, at best, a proxy. Yet poetry and film are both dream factories.  (Poetry Quotes) Listen within to find shining poetry and hear extraordinary music. You are a work of art.  (Poetry Quotes) Deals are my art form. Other people paint beautifully on canvas or write wonderful poetry. I like making deals, preferably big deals. That’s how I get my kicks.  (Poetry Quotes) I’m happy to be a writer - of prose, poetry, every kind of writing. Every person in the world who isn’t a recluse, hermit or mute uses words. I know of no other art form that we always use.  (Poetry Quotes) I am an artist, you understand? For me, a picture is like poetry. When you make art, this is not coming from an intellectual place. It’s coming from the deep side of your unconscious, your soul.  (Poetry Quotes) By the general process of epic poetry, I mean the way this form of art has constantly responded to the profound needs of the society in which it was made.  (Poetry Quotes)
