Text Quotes
Writing is a job, a craft, and you learn it by trying to write every day and by facing the page with humility and gall. And you have to love to read books, all kinds of books, good books. You are not looking for anything in particular; you are just letting stuff seep in  (Raf Quotes) I think the voice is an underrated instrument these days and it’s easy to make up for lack of ability with effects. I think sometimes people are more wowed with effects than core craftsmanship. Strong voices are not as common as they used to be  (Raf Quotes) I sometimes forget that life is fragile. The fact that I have more time to dream my dreams and take my ease is no reason at all to disregard the moment I’m in by preferring to be somewhere else. I have to remind myself that wherever I am... fast lane or slow lane, in traffic or out of traffic, racing or resting... God is there. He is in me, abiding in me, thus making it possible for me to be all there, myself  (Raf Quotes) All the work I did was to challenge politics, culture, and women’s rights. I felt like I really wanted to break out. That’s why I wanted to use graffiti. It’s more open. I don’t need people to come to an exhibition. Graffiti gives a voice to the walls  (Raf Quotes) The first thing you’ve got to do is know your craft, and then you can do something else with it  (Raf Quotes) I do craft songs, that this is designed. It’s almost like the song was written to produce this desired effect. And it probably really works for somebody. It’s maybe somebody’s favorite tune, and it’s really hard to come down on that, even if I feel a little embarrassed for it. Because some songs are written like a commercial, and that can be a little strange  (Raf Quotes) A man’s duty is to find out where the truth is, or if he cannot, at least to take the best possible human doctrine and the hardest to disprove, and to ride on this like a raft over the waters of life  (Raf Quotes) I cannot overstate how much a generous spirit contributes to good luck. Look at the luckiest people around you, the ones you envy, the ones who seem to have destiny falling habitually into their laps. If they’re anything like the fortunate people I know, they’re prepared, they’re always working at their craft, they’re alert, they involve their friends in their work, and they tend to make others feel lucky to be around them  (Raf Quotes) All good and genuine draftsmen draw according to the picture inscribed in their minds, and not according to nature  (Raf Quotes) With practice the craft will come almost of itself, in spite of you and all the more easitly if you think of something besides technique  (Raf Quotes) I tend to write things seven times before I show them to my editor. I write them seven times, then I take them on tour, read them like a dozen times on tour, then go back to the room and rewrite, read and rewrite... I would never show him a first draft, because then he’s really going to be sick of it by the twelfth draft  (Raf Quotes) While you’re meditating, all kinds of thoughts arise... You don’t find your thoughts threatening or particularly helpful. They just become the general gossip of your thoughts. This traffic of your thoughts and the verbosity of your mind are simply part of the basic chatter that goes on in the universe. Just let it go through  (Raf Quotes) My aim is not to exhibit craft, but rather to submerge it, and make it rightfully the handmaiden of beauty, power and emotional content  (Raf Quotes) A work of art rests its merits in traditional qualities. It may constitute a remarkable feat in craftsmanship; it may be a searching study of psychological states; it may be a nostalgic glance backward; it may be any one of an infinite number of concepts, none of which may have any possible bearing upon its degree of newness  (Raf Quotes) No art can be grafted with success on another art. For though they all profess the same origin, and to proceed from the same stock, yet each has its own peculiar modes both of imitating nature and of deviating from it... The deviation, more especially, will not bear transplantation to another soil  (Raf Quotes) The most perfect steersman that you can have, and the best helm, lies in the triumphal gateway of copying from nature. And this outdoes all other models; and always rely on this with a stout heart, especially as you begin to gain some judgment in draftsmanship  (Raf Quotes) The art establishment has turned away from the old curriculum which puts beauty and craft at the top of the agenda  (Raf Quotes) There comes a point when the paint doesn’t feel like paint. I don’t know why. Some mysterious thing happens. I think you have all experienced it... What counts is that the paint should really disappear, otherwise it’s craft  (Raf Quotes) Everywhere there is craft and technique; everywhere there is artistry and form. Art itself, technique, is ponderous and clumsy, and because of its awkwardness it obstructs that inner element  (Raf Quotes) Being a writer is a rather hazardous occupation and there is a horribly high rate of writers who barely have the money for the paper and pen they use for their craft  (Raf Quotes) I think of my studio as a vegetable garden, where things follow their natural course. They grow, they ripen. You have to graft. You have to water  (Raf Quotes) Sure I’ve got an awesome overdraft but as a perk I’ve got someone personally assigned to look after me. When you spend £45,000 on doing up your house you don’t have to speak to someone in a call centre  (Raf Quotes) You have to get something down, and then find ways of working in complexity and different layers of meaning... My first drafts are usually the ravings of a delusional fantasist  (Raf Quotes) Isn’t today a day to devote to craft? Isn’t tomorrow? Isn’t every day, routinely, until the end of time?  (Raf Quotes) Great writers zealously learn the craft of their profession so they can release the power and the depth of their imagination and experience  (Raf Quotes) The heroic hours of life do not announce their presence by drum and trumpet, challenging us to be true to ourselves by appeals to the martial spirit that keeps the blood at heat. Some little, unassuming, unobtrusive choice presents itself before us slyly and craftily, glib and insinuating, in the modest garb of innocence.... Then it is that you will be summoned to show the courage of adventurous youth  (Raf Quotes) Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it’s called golf  (Raf Quotes) It was a spring without voices. On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh... Even the streams were now lifeless... No witchcraft, no enemy action had silenced the rebirth of new life in this stricken world. The people had done it themselves  (Raf Quotes) There’s a simple solution to our traffic problems. We’ll have business build the roads, and government build the cars  (Raf Quotes) I take the subway because I don’t like having someone else driving. It’s hard for me to be in a cab, because the traffic makes me feel insane. On the subway you’re getting there faster and it’s easier  (Raf Quotes)
