Text Quotes
The films that I really liked and the ones that really blew my mind when I was younger were independent films. They’re like great records to me  (Records Quotes) In the beginning, I wanted to be successful. I wanted to make and have hit records. And I wanted everything that went along with it  (Records Quotes) I’m not the cool thing, and I’m not going to be the cool thing for a really long time, and it isn’t like I’m not the cool thing and I sell 3,000,000 records every time. I’m not the cool thing, and I barely sell 150,000 records, if that, ever. So I’m obviously working really hard to sustain myself. I’m actually a target to be dropped, because that’s just not enough records for a big company  (Records Quotes) ... we are obliged to produce the truth by the power that demands truth and needs it in order to function: we are constrained, we are condemned to admit the truth or to discover it. Power constantly asks questions and questions us; it constantly investigates and records; it institutionalizes the search for the truth, professionalizes it, and rewards it.... In a different sense, we are also subject to the truth in the sense that truth lays down the law: it is the discourse of truth that decides, at least in part; it conveys and propels effects of power  (Records Quotes) My kids love vinyl, I had to teach them how to put the needle on the records. Now they’re worried about scratching the records, but it’s incredible!  (Records Quotes) People who care about records are always giving me a hard time. I mean, I would destroy records in performances, and break them, and whatever I could do to them to create a sound that was something else than just the sound that was in the groove  (Records Quotes) I’m the only talk show host, I think, if there’s such a category in, what’s called, the book of records, to have a guest die while we were taping the show, yeah  (Records Quotes) There are five kids in my family and I’m the only one who didn’t get a diploma. All the kids got their diplomas hanging in my father’s room and I got my gold records. I’d say he was more proud of the diplomas  (Records Quotes) We, as artists, we have the right to express ourselves. That is our first amendment, freedom of speech. But I also believe that we have an obligation to the youth to be somewhat responsible in what we say on records. But I think that comes with age. I think that comes with artists growing up and becoming assured of who they are as people  (Records Quotes) I don’t particularly enjoy standing alone and recording my own voice or my own stuff. It’s sometimes fun to do for demos and stuff, but I really enjoy the social act of recording records, because writing it is so lonely. And it has to be  (Records Quotes) Sometimes you make a record that is what you want to hear. I’ve made a couple of those, idealized creations of what I wanted to hear. Then there are records that are what you feel  (Records Quotes) I don’t have the desire to just keep every record and put it out. That’s not what I do. I make records for people; that’s why I just continue to be consistent, where a lot of the other top writers, they kind of fell off because they started focusing on their own careers as artists. That’s not where my head is at  (Records Quotes) When you’re an artist, you can only do your own stuff. Even if you only write for other people, you’re really more focused on yourself. So while everybody’s out touring, I’m working on records  (Records Quotes) I first fell in love with music when I was a little boy. When I first heard music, I felt the beauty in it. Then, being able to tap along on a table top and box was great, but my favorite thing to do was to watch records spin. I would almost get hypnotized by it. These things are what drew me in initially  (Records Quotes) Part of the beauty and much of the moral seriousness of sport derives from the severe justice of strenuous play in a circumscribed universe of rules that protect the integrity of competition. Records are worth recording, and worth striving to surpass, because they serve as benchmarks of excellence achieved under the pressure of competition  (Records Quotes) You can tell a person’s religion 85 percent of the time from their phone records  (Records Quotes) I don’t think, that all my stuff could’ve been records. Some, maybe. The ones that I really wanted to be records, those are the ones that are going into the box  (Records Quotes) The critics have been writing me off for 20 years. That’s nothing new. As far as I know I still have plenty of fans and sell lots of records. Do I care what critics say about me? No, and I don’t read reviews  (Records Quotes) People talk about the prestige of beating records but prestige never bought me dinner in a restaurant. It’s winning games that does that  (Records Quotes) The day I was born songs were on records, phones were tied down, computers needed rooms and the web was fiction. Change the world. You can  (Records Quotes) I realize that people won’t even download the entire album and might just download a song or two and put it in a playlist for a workout or in the background while people do dishes. That’s fine and I can’t dictate how people listen to my music, but I structure records the way I listen to records  (Records Quotes) In a way, as much as we love to be a big, loud rock band, the acoustic album was a lot easier to make than the rock records. I think because it was brand new territory for the band  (Records Quotes) It’s a weird thing when you make records. You try to hear it before you make it, so you walk into the studio with this idea of what you expect to happen, and that usually changes. That usually turns into something else, and that’s a good thing. If everything was as you imagined it to be, it just wouldn’t be as much fun  (Records Quotes) Sometimes when I look back on myself on those earlier records, there was so much effort going in, so much trying. With this, I was trying to make it much more laid back  (Records Quotes) Keepers of books, keepers of print and paper on the shelves, librarians are keepers also of the records of the human spiritthe records of men’s watch upon the world and on themselves  (Records Quotes) Basically, we’ve learned to delegate. We just grew tired of becoming too psychotic and straining to make the records ourselves  (Records Quotes) If you’re in music, you’re in music, and if you’re in music you just want to keep making records and playing. That’s what it’s about, isn’t it? At least, that’s what I always thought it was about, anyway  (Records Quotes) There’s a pervasive feeling that when somebody sings a song and records a song on a record, that it’s their true feeling  (Records Quotes) This is what I wanted to do from the very beginning: write songs and make records and tour them with a good live band  (Records Quotes) When you make a record, you listen to it literally hundreds of times. When it’s done and you can’t do anything else, I never listen to my records  (Records Quotes)
