Text Quotes
But now I have learned to listen to silence. To hear its choirs singing the song of ages, chanting the hymns of space, and disclosing the secrets of eternity.  (Song Quotes) I can’t choose the most meaningful song that I’ve written. That would be like choosing one child over another. But first borns are always special.  (Song Quotes) Unfortunately, most of the songs that I write I don’t write them with guitar in mind. I just write it as a song and that was probably one of the ones that left an opening for it. The song’s all right, I wouldn’t choose to sing it now.  (Song Quotes) I wanted to have more songs with religious backgrounds. The Christmas record has strong, traditional hymns, but it also has a song called ‘Christmas in Heaven’ about missing someone that you love that’s passed on, and wondering what’s going on up there on Christmas.  (Song Quotes) The real reason Jews don’t have more Hanukkah music is that, historically, American Jewish singer-songwriters were too busy making Christmas music. ‘White Christmas,’ ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,’ ‘Silver Bells’ and ‘The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting)’ were all written by Jews.  (Song Quotes) I say if a novelty Christmas song is funny one time, then it is funny every time. - Calvin  (Song Quotes) I intend to keep writing Christmas songs. There’s still a lot more about Christmas that can be captured and feel like old-time Christmas. A lot of the traditions haven’t been explained in song.  (Song Quotes) I love all holiday music. My two favorites would probably be Donny Hathaway’s This Christmas and Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song. They epitomize Christmas for me. Those two recordings will never be touched. That’s why I’ve never redone them.  (Song Quotes) I’m glad that life isn’t like a Christmas song, because if my friends and I were building a snowman and it suddenly came alive when we put a hat on it, I’d probably freak and stab it to death with an icicle.  (Song Quotes) With a track like ‘White Christmas,’ everybody has done that song in every format you can imagine, so I just looked at the chords at that particular song and what chords would make it work. That’s kind of quite a sad song, and I had this idea of someone singing it in the subway, someone who is homeless, old and sad.  (Song Quotes) Much of my experience with language was formed in the church, which has an oral tradition. There are lots of repetitions in prayers and song refrains. There’s a sense of incantation, that if you call not once and not twice but for a third time, the spirit appears.  (Song Quotes) Everyone who moves to New York City has a book or movie or song that epitomizes the place for them. For me, it’s ‘The Cricket in Times Square’, written by George Selden and illustrated by Garth Williams.  (Song Quotes) I’m listing to music all the time. I have favorite artists. Kid Rock loves the Civil Wars’ song ‘Barton Hollow.’ We both said that’s our favorite country song of the year. That knocks me out.  (Song Quotes) My favorite song is called ‘Reachout.’ There are so many different stories told in that song. I think anyone who listens to it will gather a different meaning, but each answer is true. I also like the sound of it, period - there are a lot of classical influences.  (Song Quotes) Happy days are here again, The skies above are clear again: Let us sing a song of cheer again, Happy days are here again!  (Song Quotes) Almost every band has somebody who’s the main songwriter and who has a vision, a very clear idea of how a song should be.  (Song Quotes) A song is that touched deep my heart, give orgasm to my senses.. and I feel like climbing up the hill and scream.. leaving behind all differences.. we are the same.. mad for each other...  (Song Quotes) It makes me so mad that some people underestimate the wisdom and energy of young people. All because they don’t look the way older folks think they should look. I’m working on a song about it. Maybe some of those closed minded people will realize long hair and tattoos don’t mean they should be ignored. Close minded people are part of what’s wrong with this world.  (Song Quotes) After I released ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel,’ people started saying, Oh, it’s kind of risky. You’re coming out with a religious song. And I was thinking, Really? I grew up in Oklahoma; I always had a close relationship with God. I never thought it was risky in the least. If anything, I thought it was the safest thing I could do.  (Song Quotes) I love music in general. It’s like girls and their clothes and shoes; when you love shoes, you love shoes. So, for me, I think it’s a really dangerous thing to say I’m going to write the best dance song in the world.  (Song Quotes) You are made of bent coat hangers, honey, gravel, epoxy and handstands. I am made of lying on the floor, the same song on repeat.  (Song Quotes) When I finished performing ‘I Won’t Give Up’ for the first time, I opened my eyes, and I think there was maybe six people in there when I started, and when I finished there was about 30 people, all standing around with their jaws dropped in complete silence. I said, ‘Okay, I think this song has some power to it.’ So coffee shops work for me.  (Song Quotes) You see, we live in a cold climate and are not permitted to kiss on the street so I made up a song that wasn’t true. I made up a song called Marriage.  (Song Quotes) I don’t care if it’s a Cole Porter song, or George Gershwin, or Lennon/McCartney, or Elton John, or you know, whoever, Bob Dylan. Great songs are great songs, and they stand the test of time, and they can be interpreted and recorded with many points of view, but yet still retain the essence of what makes them good songs.  (Song Quotes) Bloody Hammer is a screw capitalism song about college kids banging hammers on top of the roof  (Song Quotes) As a songwriter, I do kind of look at ‘Santa Monica’ as a thing outside of itself, because it isn’t just my song. This is a song a lot of people tell me is a part of their high school or college years. That means a lot to me.  (Song Quotes) I’ll refer to my music in color, like ‘This song needs to be bright red.’  (Song Quotes) Women have a natural tendency to want to nurture and take care of men. You always think that the guy is going to end up coming around and that you’re going to be the one that saves him - like the Oasis song.  (Song Quotes) When I’m picking songs for an album I always want a song that I can relate to and that I have experienced. There’s nothing worse than watching an artist try and sell a song that isn’t believable coming from them.  (Song Quotes) People tell me they use my song ‘Coming Home’ at their weddings. My audience seems to range from young to old, and it’s cool when you really get to connect with all different people.  (Song Quotes)
