Text Quotes
Some of the most moving experiences I’ve had are just in black churches in the South, during the Civil Rights Movement, where people were getting beaten, killed, really struggling for the most elementary rights.  (South Quotes) Yet civil rights issues are very much on the front burner in South Carolina between the Black Lives Matter movement and police shootings.  (South Quotes) I wanted to write about the experiences of the poor and the black and the rural people of the South.  (South Quotes) I certainly know about the oppression and prejudices of being black and a woman and from the South  (South Quotes) I know my destiny. I was born into animosity, bigotry and hatred. We had water for white folks, and water for coloured folks. White lines, black lines. I came from Beaufort in South Carolina, and it was tougher than Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.  (South Quotes) Like the Negro League players, I traveled through the segregated south as a young man. Because I was black, I was denied service at many restaurants and could only drink from water fountains marked ‘Colored.’ When I went to the movies, I would have to sit in the Colored balcony.  (South Quotes) Streetcar’ is no longer about the moment at all. There is no Blanche DuBois anywhere; south, north, east or west. We don’t have Blanche DuBois at the moment. But we have Willy Loman; everywhere we look we see Willy Loman. We are Willy Loman. We’re on Facebook; we need to be known; we’re selling all the time.  (South Quotes) I like country music. I’m not going to lie. I’m from the South, and I grew up on it. My dad was a country singer-songwriter, so it’s in my blood, and I love it.  (South Quotes) I’m from Canada, and New Zealand feels like you took all the best bits of Canada and squished them onto a tiny island like Hawaii. I was absolutely blown away by the beauty of the South Island.  (South Quotes) My parents, Mary Agnes Smith and Rowland Smith, both had to work since their early teens, she in the holiday boarding house of her mother and he in his father’s market garden in Marton Moss, a village on the south side of Blackpool, just north of Saint Anne’s-on-Sea.  (South Quotes) My father passed away a few days before my election. This man, an African American born to a poor single mother in 1936 in the South, would worry in the last years of his life that he had better life chances when he was growing up than a young man born in the same circumstances would have today.  (South Quotes) I’m incredibly boring; I had a very happy childhood. I never starved, nor did I have a silver spoon in my mouth. I’m one of those terribly middle-of-the-road, British middle class, South London gents.  (South Quotes) The people I grew up around, almost all of them had been born and raised in the South. And, you know, they didn’t always go to church, but they lived their lives as if God were watching everything they did.  (South Quotes) I was born in New York and raised in South Florida, so I’m an East Coast girl  (South Quotes) I’m a good little middle-class boy. I live in Gloucestershire or Kensington. I don’t exist in the war zone, but it’s certainly not far away. I grew up in an area where it is a war zone - south London.  (South Quotes) The G8 nations, together with the five major emerging economies of China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, use almost three-quarters of the Earth’s biocapacity - the capacity of the world’s ecosystems to produce natural resources and to reduce harmful substances.  (South Quotes) I’ve committed myself to serve my constituents in South Shields and I have committed myself to British politics.  (South Quotes) I used to teach improv courses in Amsterdam where we would do team-building exercises, and they can go south very quickly.  (South Quotes) There’s a national ambition, a collective, in a sense, political ambition, which I think is the thing we see from far away. That’s the fact that China’s building roads and airports and extending its reaches out into the East China Sea and the South China Sea, and in a way that’s putting it into some tension with its neighbors.  (South Quotes) What the Bush administration is primarily interested in is regime change in the United States, not regime change in Iraq or South East Asia or the Balkans. A foreign war is a wonderful lollipop to stuff in the mouth of a possibly quarrelsome press  (South Quotes) I’ve heard people say South Africans are arrogant, that they act no differently from their colonial masters. That needs to change. It’s in your business interest as an entrepreneur to form meaningful partnerships. That’s how you do well for your shareholders.  (South Quotes) I have a dream that Africa should have one bloc - north to south - we could trade freely, people can move freely and that makes business sense.  (South Quotes) In 1969, I wrote a musical called ‘Mother Earth.’ It was a rock musical with an ecology theme. We did it at the South Coast Repertory Theatre in Southern California where I was a member. It was a smash hit in this small theater.  (South Quotes) I knew South Africa was going to change; you can’t keep people down forever. It’s unnatural. Somehow something had to crack, and it did.  (South Quotes) I’m smart cause I’m Korean, I’m not so smart cause I’m from the south. They cancel each other out, so I’m even.  (South Quotes) My mother was a member of the Cape Coloured community. ‘Coloured’ is the South African word for the half-caste community that was a by-product of the early contact between black and white.  (South Quotes) I’ve still not written as well as I want to. I want to write so that the reader in Des Moines, Iowa, in Kowloon, China, in Cape Town, South Africa, can say, ‘You know, that’s the truth. I wasn’t there, and I wasn’t a six-foot black girl, but that’s the truth.’  (South Quotes) The Showdown is a great way to bring attention to these historic Virginia tracks where many NASCAR drivers cut their teeth in stock car racing, including myself. Tracks like South Boston and Langley are the heart of the sport and draw a great crowd to our Showdown events.  (South Quotes) Grunge came from a group of English photographers, and they were documenting their own reality... I’m South American - we celebrate life.  (South Quotes) I relax by catching up with my friends and family. When I am at home in Ibiza, I find the contrast of living on a divided island relaxing - with beauty and tranquillity in the north and a sense of fun, shallowness and celebration in the south.  (South Quotes)
