Text Quotes
This idea of helping the next generation is a very intrinsic part of photojournalism. We need to continue to build this new group of photographers that come in and tell these stories  (Stories Quotes) I’ve been writing since I was 7, but before that, I was orally making stories  (Stories Quotes) There can’t be a pure myth, especially when the myth has been handed down in the oral tradition. As the stories are told, they change. If the stories don’t change they just die  (Stories Quotes) Wherever a story comes from, whether it is a familiar myth or a private memory, the retelling exemplifies the making of a connection from one pattern to another: a potential translation in which narrative becomes parable and the once upon a time comes to stand for some renascent truth. This approach applies to all the incidents of everyday life: the phrase in the newspaper, the endearing or infuriating game of a toddler, the misunderstanding at the office. Our species thinks in metaphors and learns through stories  (Stories Quotes) When a friend needs consoling, do not give in to the temptation of telling stories similar to theirs of disaster or bereavement. It is something people often do to show empathy but nothing is more tiresome than other people’s problems when you want to focus on your own. Listening is by far the best form of consolation  (Stories Quotes) I’ve always loved comic books. As a kid, I used to read cowboy stories and historical comics about other worlds, unknown places that would take me out of myself and which helped to develop my imagination  (Stories Quotes) As with any other great force of nature, there is both glory and danger in the stories we tell ourselves. Some are toxic and keep our problems festering. Others are tonic and bring us beyond the limitations of our previous history. To be in a life of our own definition, we must be able to discover which stories we are following and determine which ones help us grow the most interesting possibilities  (Stories Quotes) Notice how every science fiction movie or television show starts with a shot of the location where the story is about to occur. Movies that take place in outer space always start with a shot of stars and a starship. Movies that take place on another world always start with a shot of that planet. This is to let you know where you are. Novels and stories start the same way. You have to give the reader a sense of where he is and what’s happening as quickly as possible. You don’t want to start the story by confusing the reader  (Stories Quotes) Everybody wants to feel that you’re writing to a certain demographic because that’s good business, but I’ve never done that... I tried to write stories that would interest me. I’d say, what would I like to read?... I don’t think you can do your best work if you’re writing for somebody else, because you never know what that somebody else really thinks or wants  (Stories Quotes) There are vast differences between scripts and stories, of course. Few fiction writers would want to give up the opportunity to explore how the minds of their characters work, or to set aside the opportunity to provide necessary background exposition in a succinct fashion  (Stories Quotes) I can’t tell stories to save my life. I like to have fun, and I go out and have a lot of fun. But I’m not really an entertainer that way. I’m much more shy  (Stories Quotes) I have a theory... that someplace at the heart of most compelling stories is something that doesn’t make sense  (Stories Quotes) I don’t want to deal with big, grand themes in my stories; art has nothing to do with themes. When you deal with themes, you are not creating; you are lecturing  (Stories Quotes) I’ve always wanted to be a writer. Ever since I learned to read, I’ve wanted to share stories with others the way my favorite writers shared their stories with me  (Stories Quotes) I’ve always been drawn to stories and telling them; whether it was through being a part of theater when I was a little kid, or film, or with music, there’s just been an innate desire to feel that connection  (Stories Quotes) I think of something quite different from a snapshot. I know of a lot of poems, some very fine ones, that are like snapshots, but I’m more interested in poetry that is like an endless film, long stories, things that weave together many different strands, like a big piece of cloth, not like a photograph  (Stories Quotes) When you are in your teenage years you are consciously experiencing everything for the first time, so adolescent stories are all beginnings. There are never any endings  (Stories Quotes) The thing that grounds you, and the thing that really gives you a sense of wholeness, is your family, friends and your community. Those are the things that can mirror back to you what you’re experiencing, and can affirm to you that the stories you are telling are true  (Stories Quotes) Someone once told me that the most dynamic actors are people who have stories. People who have lived life. People with experiences  (Stories Quotes) And I had always liked vampire stories because they are great material that can be refashioned in lots of ways  (Stories Quotes) I think films about men are often about characters who don’t want to express their feelings. You’re supposed to kind of admire them for not expressing their feelings. And I feel that’s a bit dull. Women’s stories often have stronger emotional content, which I enjoy doing. What I really love doing is mixing that with humor  (Stories Quotes) I like making stories and characters that people can relate to. I also like giving the audience a departure from whatever they’re thinking about in their life and enjoying a show or a movie  (Stories Quotes) My stories are sometimes closer to poems or meditations, but often there is at least a little narrative in them  (Stories Quotes) I like exploring both the light parts and the dark parts of a single person. And all of those shades tend to come out most acutely in stories about families  (Stories Quotes) I do have comfort, because as an actor you don’t want that anxiety of wondering if you’re going to continue with a certain role or if you’re going to be employed the next year. It’s nice to be comfortable with that and then you can concern yourself with the stories and nothing else. There’s no other agenda than putting out a good product  (Stories Quotes) I’ve always liked stories. I’m always reading, ever since I was a kid. I’ve always been reading and wanting to be in some other world  (Stories Quotes) Personally, as a print journalist, I always found the most interesting stories to be the ones hacks talked about in the bar after work  (Stories Quotes) That’s a frustration sometimes, that certain directors that I’d like to work with, they just aren’t doing stories that I’m sort of castable in. Not always, but sometimes I have that frustration  (Stories Quotes) I’m quite interested in the absolute roots of narrative, why we tell stories at all: where the monsters come from  (Stories Quotes) Anyway, stories bring us together to find common ground, to find our way through life together, or just to entertain us, and I am just thrilled to be a part of that process  (Stories Quotes)
