Text Quotes
She stays lost in the middle of her own world somewhere. We can’t get in and she doesn’t come out. Not often anyway, and certainly not for any length of time. But her mind takes her to somewhere kind, I think, to judge by the peaceful, serene look on her face most of the time  (Takes Quotes) I wanted to tell her that being loved is a talent too, that it takes as much guts and as much work as loving; that some people, for whatever reason, never learn the knack  (Takes Quotes) Sometimes, you turn back. Sometimes, you walk away. And sometimes, you find the place you’re meant to be, and you stay there. You find a way to make it work. Whatever it takes  (Takes Quotes) Fear sucks. Because you never know when it will attack. Sometimes it sneaks up behind you, giggling like your best girlfriend from seventh grade. Then it whacks you on the back of the head, takes you straight to your knees before you realize what hit you. Other times you can see it coming, just a dot on the horizon, but you’re like a canary in a cage. All you can do is hang in there and hope you don’t get motion sickness and puke all over the newspapers  (Takes Quotes) Evil doesn’t die. It never dies. It just takes on a new face, a new name. Just because we’ve been touched by it once, it doesn’t mean we’re immune to ever being hurt again. Lightning can strike twice  (Takes Quotes) It’s hard to make something that’s interesting. It’s really, really hard. It’s like a law of nature, a law of aerodynamics, that anything that’s written or anything that’s created wants to be mediocre. The natural state of all writing is mediocrity... So what it takes to make anything more than mediocre is such an act of will  (Takes Quotes) I think each role takes a little from you and circles around you for the rest of your life. I don’t think you ever abandon any of them  (Takes Quotes) We keep quiet about what we read. Our enjoyment of a book remains a jealously guarded secret. Perhaps because there’s no need to talk, or because it takes time to distill what we’ve read before we can say anything. Silence is our guarantee of intimacy. We might have finished reading but we’re still living the book  (Takes Quotes) We human beings build houses because we’re alive but we write books because we’re mortal. We live in groups because we’re sociable but we read because we know we’re alone. Reading offers a kind of companionship that takes no one’s place but that no one can replace either. It offers no definitive explanation of our destiny but links us inextricably to life. Its tiny secret links remind us of how paradoxically happy we are to be alive while illuminating how tragically absurd life is  (Takes Quotes) You are a person and then you cease to be a person, and a cadaver takes your place  (Takes Quotes) Interests evolve into hobbies or volunteer work, which grow into passions. It takes time, more time than anyone imagines  (Takes Quotes) I smile a lot. I heard someone say once that it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown, so I’m trying it out  (Takes Quotes) She had perfect features, with her eye, nose, lips, and ears the right size and in right places. That is all it takes to make people beautiful, normal body parts – yet why does nature mess it up so many times?  (Takes Quotes) To be a person who sees a political ad on television and takes the statements in it as fact, how can you exist in this world? How is it you’re not robbed daily by charlatans who knock at your door?  (Takes Quotes) ... a river season will last as long as it takes you to reach your new place. If you get into the river and let it take you where you need to be, your river season will last an afternoon. But if you fear change and struggle and hold on to the rocks, the river season will last and last. It will not end until your body becomes exhausted, your grip weakens, your hands slide off the rocks and the current takes you to your new place  (Takes Quotes) That’s the problem with folks nowadays. Nobody takes responsibility for their actions. Make a mistake and you pay for it. That’s life  (Takes Quotes) There are so many things we’ve been brought up to believe that it takes you an awfully long time to realize that they aren’t you  (Takes Quotes) I think we communicate only too well, in our silence, in what is unsaid, and that what takes place is a continual evasion, desperate rearguard attempts to keep ourselves to ourselves. Communication is too alarming. To enter into someone else’s life is too frightening. To disclose to others the poverty within us is too fearsome a possibility  (Takes Quotes) From a tale one expects a bit of wildness, of exaggeration and dramatic effect. The tale has no inherent concern with decorum, balance or harmony... A tale may not display a great deal of structural, psychological, or narrative sophistication, though it might possess all three, but it seldom takes its eye off its primary goal, the creation of a particular emotional state in its reader. Depending on the tale, that state could be wonder, amazement, shock, terror, anger, anxiety, melancholia, or the momentary frisson of horror  (Takes Quotes) She’d tell me how she’d handle the backhanded compliment by smiling and pretending she was receiving a genuine compliment all the while ignoring their attempt to be insulting. After all, it’s the way an insult is received that makes it an insult. You can’t really give offense unless someone takes it  (Takes Quotes) It doesn’t take long to write things of which you know nothing. When you write of actual things, it takes longer, because you have to live them first  (Takes Quotes) We all have that moment in life when something terrible happens for the first time. Something so unexpected, so awful, that it takes the magic out of the world. Life becomes harder, colder. And everything we do in our lives, from that day on, is our way of coping with that one moment. We stop living and we merely exist. We either choose to move on from that, or we let it consume us  (Takes Quotes) It takes a year, nephew... a full turn of the calendar, to get over losing someone  (Takes Quotes) The upside to grief is it takes away your appetite. When people say you look good they really mean it. Nature’s thoughtful that way  (Takes Quotes) Obviously it takes eight brains to come to one decision in this crowd. Good thing they have one another  (Takes Quotes) My tendency to make up stories and lie compulsively for the sake of my own amusement takes up a good portion of my day and provides me with a peace of mind not easily attainable in this economic climate  (Takes Quotes) It takes billions of years to create a human being. And it takes only a few seconds to die  (Takes Quotes) There’s only so much room in one heart. You can fill it up with love or you can fill it with resentment. But every bit of resentment you hold takes space away from the love. And the resentment don’t do no good noway, but look what love can do  (Takes Quotes) A difference in self loathing? Please. The only difference between a gun and a rope is the time it takes to tie the knot  (Takes Quotes) Anxiety and desire are two, often conflicting, orientations to the unknown. Both are tilted toward the future. Desire implies a willingness, or a need, to engage this unknown, while anxiety suggests a fear of it. Desire takes one out of oneself, into the possibility or relationship, but it also takes one deeper into oneself. Anxiety turns one back on oneself, but only onto the self that is already known  (Takes Quotes)
