When the seasons shift, even the subtle beginning, the scent of a promised change, I feel something stir inside me. Hopefulness? Gratitude? Openness? Whatever it is, it’s welcome  (The Sea Quotes) At the beginning of meditation training thoughts will arrive one on top of another, uninterrupted, like a steep mountain waterfall. Gradually, as you perfect meditation, thoughts become like the water in a deep, narrow gorge, then a great river slowly winding its way down to the sea; finally the mind becomes like a still and placid ocean, ruffled by only the occasional ripple or wave  (The Sea Quotes) Someone who bears a grudge while he prays is like a person who sows in the sea and expects to reap a harvest  (The Sea Quotes) I don’t deliberately look for something dark or bleak or disconnected, in fact that’s not something I’m even conscious of in the work as I’m making it. I’m always trying to create beauty, reveal hope, show the sense of longing that exists in isolation and loneliness, and capture the search for something greater inside all of my subjects  (The Sea Quotes) The experienced illustrator subscribes to the principle of the application of the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair. Should inspiration whisk down your chimney, be at your table. The first ten thousand drawings are the hardest. Put another way, you have ten thousand bad drawings within and should expel them as quickly as possible  (The Sea Quotes) Through the window of my mask I see a wall of coral, its surface a living kaleidoscope of lilac flecks, splashes of gold, reddish streaks and yellows, all tinged by the familiar transparent blue of the sea  (The Sea Quotes) Can the water in the valleys ever stop and rest? When the water finally reaches the sea, it becomes great waves  (The Sea Quotes) At night I leave the lights on in my little house and walks across the flat fields. When I look back from a distance the house is like a boat on the sea. It’s really the only time I feel safe  (The Sea Quotes) From my mother came the idea that going down to the sea repaired the spirit. That is where she walked when she was sad or worried or lonely for my father. If she had been crying, she came back composed; if she had left angry with us, she returned in good humor. So we naturally believed that there was a cleansing, purifying effect to be had; that letting the fresh wind blow through you mind and spirits as well as your hair and clothing purged black thoughts; that contemplating the ceaseless motion of the waves calmed a raging spirit  (The Sea Quotes) It is fashionable nowadays to talk about the endless riches of the sea. The ocean is regarded as a sort of bargain basement, but I don’t agree with that estimate. People don’t realize that water in the liquid state is very rare in the universe. Away from earth it is usually a gas. This moisture is a blessed treasure, and it is our basic duty, if we don’t want to commit suicide, to preserve it  (The Sea Quotes) After announcing that the 2000 season would be his last before retirement: Last winter I made the decision to coach for only one more season. I have been wrestling with the timing of announcing that decision. After seeing the outstanding attitude and work ethic of this team, I came to the conclusion that it’s best to get the announcement out of the way now so we can focus on the season and avoid the repeated distractions that come from questions about my retirement  (The Sea Quotes) Dissent... is a right essential to any concept of the dignity and freedom of the individual; it is essential to the search for truth in a world wherein no authority is infallible  (The Sea Quotes) Spirits rise as the sails fill... Gone is the sea’s glassy surface, and with it the terrible glare.Close the hatches and ports! We’re sailing again!  (The Sea Quotes) What I find interesting is how close you can run the laughter along the seam of seriousness, and occasionally cross it, so that half the house genuinely doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Custard pie humour is fairly universal, but at the other end, which I’m more interested in, there’s the humour that hovers on the darkness, that walks in the shadow of something else, not always that obvious  (The Sea Quotes) Today my son and I went for a stroll and saw the sea lions and watched the sunset and played ball in the park with our dog  (The Sea Quotes) I learned a long time ago that one way to maximize potential for performance is to be calm in my mind. What I try to achieve during the season is a relaxed state of concentration. I simply try to cleanse my mind of the pressures that people are trying to heap on me  (The Sea Quotes) Churches that make an impact are more focused on putting boots on the streets than butts in the seats  (The Sea Quotes) It is a long baptism into the seas of humankind, my daughter. Better immersion than to live untouched  (The Sea Quotes) A little threat of evil is always the far better way to fill the seats. But sometimes the monsters aren’t who we think they are  (The Sea Quotes) The crumbling castle, looming among the mists, exhaled the season, and every cold stone breathed it out. The tortured trees by the dark lake burned and dripped, their leaves snatched by the wind were whirled in wild circles through the towers. The clouds mouldered as they lay coiled, or shifted themselves uneasily upon the stone skyfield, sending up wreathes that drifted through the turrets and swarmed up hidden walls  (The Sea Quotes) Each of us from the seance stood alone. Like so many pillars of salt, we had tried to look back and failed. And in the eyes of the others who shared the pale, flat sky with us, there was sometimes suspicion, sometimes a little fear  (The Sea Quotes) Don’t always want to go up. Go down, like water, because eventually it’ll go up again. Just like rain, it falls from the sky, flows as a river, then merges with the sea, the goes up again as a cloud  (The Sea Quotes) Topography is one of my chief themes in my poetry.. about the country, the suburbs and the seaside... then there come’s love... and increasingly; the fear of death  (The Sea Quotes) It follows the seasons, beginning each year with the fond expectancy of springtime and ending with the hard facts of autumn  (The Sea Quotes) Mystery of mysteries, water and air are right there before us in the sea. Every time I view the sea, I feel a calming sense of security, as if visiting my ancestral home; I embark on a voyage of seeing  (The Sea Quotes) Science is the search for truth, that is the effort to understand the world: it involves the rejection of bias, of dogma, of revelation, but not the rejection of morality  (The Sea Quotes) Now more than ever, as the role of memory in our culture erodes at a faster pace than ever before, we need to cultivate our ability to remember. Our memories make us who we are. They are the seat of our values and source of our character. Competing to see who can memorize more pages of poetry might seem beside the point, but it’s about taking a stand against forgetfulness, and embracing primal capacities from which too many of us have became estrangedmemory training is not just for the sake of performing party tricks; it’s about nurturing something profoundly and essentially human  (The Sea Quotes) Like the seasons of the year, life changes frequently and drastically. You enjoy it or endure it as it comes and goes, as it ebbs and flows  (The Sea Quotes) Seattle was built out on pilings over the sea, and at high tide the whole city seemed to come afloat like a ship lifting free from a mud berth and swaying in its chains  (The Sea Quotes) Why should the search for happiness be only or essentially material and mental?
