Text Quotes
I see a ton of theatre whenever I’m not working to stay inspired. I love feeling like I’m a part of the theatre community and following the work of actors and writers I admire. I’m a big reader, too.  (Theatre Quotes) Film is a much lonelier process than theatre. You really don’t have any rehearsal time in film. You don’t shape it together... with theatre, there is a complete kind of family atmosphere. The sociable side of this business is the theatrical side, it really isn’t the film side.  (Theatre Quotes) I’m interested in working with groups of actors to tell complicated stories about what’s happening to people, and that’s because I came out of the theatre where I worked in ensembles, and I really loved that.  (Theatre Quotes) I don’t recall making a conscious decision to become an actor. I just remember winning a prize at a theatre festival when I was 17 and saying: ‘Oh, that’s what I have to do.’  (Theatre Quotes) In the theatre you can change things ever so slightly; it’s an organic thing. Whereas in film you only have that chance on the day, and you have no control over it at all.  (Theatre Quotes) Characters in TV and theatre tend to experience a lot of conflict, so I push myself through sport to physical and emotional levels that hurt so I’ve some other reference for extreme experience that isn’t me shouting at my girlfriend or my mum. It’s a way of controlling the uncontrollable.  (Theatre Quotes) The cool thing is that, unlike film, the theatre roles for women get better and better as you get older.  (Theatre Quotes) It is not the place of the theatre to show the correct path, but only to offer the means by which all possible paths may be examined.  (Theatre Quotes) I tried to get into the National Youth Theatre and didn’t, and I tried to get into drama school and didn’t, and then I went to university and was really delighted that I went there. I think having the word ‘no’ can be quite creative.  (Theatre Quotes) Growing up in Malaysia and England, there wasn’t an obvious route into the comics world, so my creative energy went into theatre and prose and then movies and TV.  (Theatre Quotes) The power of the print reviewer is one of those urban myths. There have always been shows that slipped under the critical radar to become popular successes: ‘Tobacco Road’, ‘Abie’s Irish Rose’ and our old friend ‘Spider-Man’, which got the worst reviews in theatre history and is still apparently going strong.  (Theatre Quotes) STG and the Ramshorn Theatre are a vital part of Glasgow’s rich cultural history. To abandon them now is to abandon not only our past, but our future.  (Theatre Quotes) By the time I was seven, I did a sonnet at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre for Shakespeare’s birthday because my dad had been at the first season of the Globe and was friends with the artistic director. Somehow, that lead to me doing a sonnet!  (Theatre Quotes) First, I started taking dance classes, and then I started taking singing lessons. Then my mom put me into a year-round theatre program where I did seven shows.  (Theatre Quotes) I’ve been acting my whole life. I have this huge imagination! I’m a dancer and my mom’s a dance teacher, and I was always performing and entertaining people. I’d go to see live theatre or a movie, and I’d become the main character for a few days afterwards. I loved being somebody new for a temporary amount of time.  (Theatre Quotes) The theatre only knows what it’s doing next week, not like the opera, where they say: What are we going to do in five years’ time? A completely different attitude.  (Theatre Quotes) I think for me, the imaginary world was always exciting. I started in New York doing theatre, from having just one person in an audience to performing for a full house. I think I’ve always enjoyed playing different characters, blending into different environments and such.  (Theatre Quotes) I find theatre easier than films, because it gives you an environment of a dark hall, the audience concentrating with you... whereas, film sets are not conducive to long rehearsals, and it is difficult to pick up the emotions amidst all that is going on around you.  (Theatre Quotes) ‘Doctor Who’ was my first telly job, and before that I did a lot of theatre in education, children’s theatre.  (Theatre Quotes) I respect the system out there in Hollywood, I really do, but I’m very intent on art versus commerce. I want to do it all - film, TV and theatre - if it’s the right job.  (Theatre Quotes) The first rule of good theatre is ‘Show, don’t tell.’ It applies to good political action as well.  (Theatre Quotes) Theatre is immediate, it’s alive, you’re there with the audience, it can’t be done again and again and again and again, it’s organic.  (Theatre Quotes) I was fortunate because my mum shared my love of film with me, so we would go to the movies twice, three times a week, and we would watch movies at home. As a teenager, instead of going out, we would have these huge movie nights in. But I almost failed drama at school. I hated it. It was all about the history of theatre.  (Theatre Quotes) I’ve done a lot of costume drama and theatre - the National Theatre and In fact, most of my work at the theatre, at the National Theatre anyway, was period.  (Theatre Quotes) The first time my mum and dad went to the theatre was at my drama school in third year  (Theatre Quotes) When I was at youth theatre and drama school, I never thought people would mistake me for a stand-up.  (Theatre Quotes) I came out of drama school thinking I’d do some theatre, maybe some television, and maybe, someday, a film.  (Theatre Quotes) I went to drama school in Paris and started doing theatre with a friend. Then I moved into movies and slowly but surely I got roles.  (Theatre Quotes) I love film, but it’s funny going to drama school for three years, where you spend most of your time training for theatre, then coming out and just doing films.  (Theatre Quotes) I took up drama and did so much extracurricular work, like the National Youth Theatre and Guildhall’s Saturday school. Acting is where I felt most comfortable and how I wanted to express myself.  (Theatre Quotes)
