Text Quotes
I’ve played journalists before, and I have good friends who are journalists. I think being an actor is not very far from being a journalist. Because you investigate, you try to understand, you’re asking questions, you’re interested in the other  (Urnal Quotes) Certainly I’m still mining my experiences as a journalist. I think it’s no coincidence that all three of my novels basically are about how people act in a time of catastrophe. Do they go to their best self or their worst self?  (Urnal Quotes) While I love to read contemporary fiction, I’m not drawn to writing it. Perhaps it’s because the former journalist in me is too inhibited by the press of reality; when I think about writing of my own time I always think about nonfiction narratives. Or perhaps it’s just that I find the present too confounding  (Urnal Quotes) A good journalist, as you know, is a great listener. And so’s a good writer. And I got to listen to people for almost 20 years. That serves me well, I hope, when I try to understand how a character might be feeling, or how they might react  (Urnal Quotes) Science doesn’t care, by and large, what the answers are. It’s only interested in getting the right answer. And journalism should be very much that way  (Urnal Quotes) I didn’t have my own journals, but my mother kept a journal while I was in the hospital, and my father wrote newsletters to keep friends and family updated on my progress  (Urnal Quotes) How is it that, in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence, there are still some who would deny the dangers of climate change? Not surprisingly, the loudest voices are not scientific, and it is remarkable how many economists, lawyers, journalists and politicians set themselves up as experts on the science  (Urnal Quotes) I also think there’s too many players who say the same boring answers, they don’t even have to turn up to interviews because journalists answer their own questions the way they ask them. Unfortunately the way it is now players are so afraid to say anything, but I’d like them to be honest  (Urnal Quotes) I like being involved in the lighter side of journalism because it serves a purpose, and it’s fun. And I can keep my opinions off camera if I want  (Urnal Quotes) Scepticism is a necessary and vital part of the journalist’s toolkit. But when scepticism becomes cynicism it can close off thought and block the search for truth  (Urnal Quotes) I’m an entertainer. Not a journalist or spokesman for anybody. Truth is, a lot of my listeners absolutely hate what I have to say  (Urnal Quotes) When I was in 10th grade, I took one of those tests that’s supposed to tell you what you should be when you grow up. The test told me that I should be a journalist  (Urnal Quotes) When I was young, I flirted with the idea of a career in journalism on one hand and politics on the other  (Urnal Quotes) I have learned as a journalist that if you look long enough and hard enough and carefully enough, most truths are discoverable  (Urnal Quotes) One good thing about leaving daily journalism was that I was no longer obliged to read all the book prize short lists  (Urnal Quotes) The reason I often say, for me, photography is analogous to poetry, for my kind of work more so than journalism, is because it’s so open to interpretation. And I’m very happy having different interpretations of it  (Urnal Quotes) Carelessness is not fatal to journalism, nor are cliches, for the eye rests lightly on them. But what is intended to be read once can seldom be read more than once; a journalist has to accept the fact that his work, by its very todayness, is excluded from any share in tomorrow  (Urnal Quotes) There are flaws in the way politics is reported in this country today and we should do something about it,.. Radio and television coverage of politics doesn’t see its role as a mission to explain, but to destroy, in a pernicious culture in which journalists pit themselves against politicians  (Urnal Quotes) Keep a gratitude journal. Write down at least three things a day you are either thankful for, made you smile or genuinely inspired you  (Urnal Quotes) I want to help accelerate the evolution of the press because right now, newsrooms are cutting investigative journalists, and we need investigative journalists  (Urnal Quotes) I think most newspapermen by definition have to be liberal; if they’re not liberal, by definition of it, then they can hardly be good newspapermen. If they’re preordained dogmatists for a cause, then they can’t be very good journalists  (Urnal Quotes) As an emerging photojournalist in the early 70s, my focus was on trying to create stories for magazines to the exclusion of almost everything else. I wish someone had told me then that the most personally important pictures you’ll ever make are those about you and your life. I’m glad I had the chance to work for some great magazines, but I really miss those little everyday images, the ones that take place in and around your own life, which will never make the news. Don’t sell yourself short: photograph your own life, not just everyone else’s  (Urnal Quotes) As a journalist, you sort of grind away, taking rejections as they come, building on whatever advances you’ve achieved  (Urnal Quotes) War affected my family a lot, and I was quite curious about it. I first went off to war in the early 90’s as a journalist, partly out of curiosity and partly because I needed a career. War reporting has been very glamorous and exciting, and everything else that young men like  (Urnal Quotes) It is common, and encouraged by many journals, for research to be judged by the impact factor of the journal that publishes it. But as a journal’s score is an average, it says little about the quality of any individual piece of research  (Urnal Quotes) In the end, the discipline of verification is what separates journalism from entertainment, propaganda, fiction, or art  (Urnal Quotes) Don’t use your mind for a filing cabinet. Use your mind to work out problems and find answers; file away good ideas in your journal  (Urnal Quotes) I think that if you feel imaginatively towards a subject, you really shouldn’t do it in a journalistic context, because then you’re just fabricating, and that’s crazy  (Urnal Quotes) I’m just very, very slow. I would not make it as a journalist, I’ve got to tell you. I sweat bullets over every sentence, and sometimes, you know, a day will pass and I’ve written one paragraph, and I’ve been at the computer for four hours  (Urnal Quotes) In my career, I have played a gangster, an ex cop, a journalist and a film director. Yet, the label of a serial kisser refuses to leave me  (Urnal Quotes)
