Text Quotes
Imaginative writing has always been a solitary and indeed a somewhat antisocial activity. Apprenticeship existed, no doubt, but it was an apprenticeship to books and not to living masters of the craft  (Writing Quotes) Readers take in dialogue one thought at a time. A frequent mistake of beginners is to combine thoughts, which may be suitable for other forms of writing but not for dialogue. Another mistake is speechifying. Three sentences at a time is tops, yet many beginners write speeches that go on and on  (Writing Quotes) You never learn how to write a novel. You just learn how to write the novel that you’re writing  (Writing Quotes) Writing fiction is a solitary occupation but not really a lonely one. The writer’s head is mobbed with characters, images and language, making the creative process something like eavesdropping at a party for which you’ve had the fun of drawing up the guest list. Loneliness usually doesn’t set in until the work is finished, and all the partygoers and their imagined universe have disappeared  (Writing Quotes) Don’t hedge your prose with little timidities. Good writing is lean and confident... Every little qualifier whittles away some fraction of the reader’s trust. Readers want a writer who believes in himself and in what he is saying. Don’t diminish that belief. Don’t be kind of bold. Be bold  (Writing Quotes) My commodity as a writer, whatever I’m writing about, is me. And your commodity is you. Don’t alter your voice to fit the subject. Develop one voice that readers will recognize when they hear it on the page, a voice that’s enjoyable not only in its musical line but in its avoidance of sounds that would cheapen its tone: breeziness and condescension and clichés  (Writing Quotes) Once the grammar has been learned, writing is simply talking on paper and in time learning what not to say  (Writing Quotes) I am never as clear about any matter as when I have finished writing about it  (Writing Quotes) Even if I could not earn a penny from my writing, I would earn my livelihood at something else and continue to write at night  (Writing Quotes) The writing process is sort of like when you’ve got no electricity and you’ve gotten up in the middle of the night to find the bathroom, feeling your way along in the dark. I can’t hardly tell you what I do because I really don’t know  (Writing Quotes) Photography is a system of visual editing. At bottom, it is a matter of surrounding with a frame a portion of one’s cone of vision, while standing in the right place at the right time. Like chess, or writing, it is a matter of choosing from among given possibilities, but in the case of photography the number of possibilities is not finite but infinite  (Writing Quotes) I will be writing to the relevant authorities to complain, but I’m wasting my breath  (Writing Quotes) When I find someone I respect writing about an edgy, nervous wine that dithered in the glass, I cringe. When I hear someone I don’t respect talking about an austere, unforgiving wine, I turn a bit austere and unforgiving myself. When I come across stuff like that and remember about the figs and bananas, I want to snigger uneasily. You can call a wine red, and dry, and strong, and pleasant. After that, watch out  (Writing Quotes) I got so tired of hearing those proverbs when I was a child. Now I use them all the time. Sometimes they are the best way to say what needs to be said. I teach them to my students. I have a collection of proverbs for class discussion and writing assignments  (Writing Quotes) Charity is just writing checks and not being engaged. Philanthropy, to me, is being engaged, not only with your resources but getting people and yourself really involved and doing things that haven’t been done before  (Writing Quotes) We should think more about it, and accustom ourselves to the thought of death. We can’t allow the fear of death to creep up on us unexpectedly. We have to make the fear familiar, and one way is to write about it. I don’t think writing and thinking about death is characteristic only of old men. I think that if people began thinking about death sooner, they’d make fewer foolish mistakes  (Writing Quotes) Truth is always the first war casualty. The emotional disturbances and distortions in historical writing are greatest in wartime  (Writing Quotes) Learning to program has no more to do with designing interactive software than learning to touch type has to do with writing poetry  (Writing Quotes) If you want to be good at anything, you have to work hard at it. It doesn’t just fall from the sky. I work every day at trying to improve my writing, and I really enjoy it. Nothing fascinates me more than putting words together, and seeing how a collection of words can produce quite a profound effect  (Writing Quotes) When I’m writing I’ve been playing something for a couple of hours and I’m almost in a trance. At two or three in the morning you can actually see bits of inspiration floating about and grab them... I think probably the only thing that is around in these songs is that I was really lonely when I wrote a lot of them. But it was really by my own choosing because I was devoting myself to songwriting and dancing and I wasn’t really going out and seeing people  (Writing Quotes) I write a lot from instinct. But as you’re writing out of instinct, once you reach a certain level as a songwriter, the craft is always there talking to you in the back of your head... that tells you when it’s time to go to the chorus, when it’s time to rhyme. Real basic craft... it’s second nature  (Writing Quotes) There are no limitations with a song. To me a song is a little piece of art. It can be whatever you like it to be. You can write the simplest song, and that’s lovely, or you can just write a song that is abstract art... A lot of my songs are very serious, I’m like dead serious about certain things and I feel that I’m writing about the world, through my own eyes... I have a love for simple basic song structure, although sometimes you’d never know it... Most of the songs I wrote at night. I would just wake in the middle of the night. That’s when I found the space to write  (Writing Quotes) Characters last. Beautiful writing lasts. A compelling narrative lasts. Art survives long after ideas go extinct  (Writing Quotes) It’s as simple as finding something on the street and then writing a jingle. If I’m driving and I have my turn signal on and it’s rhythmic, maybe I just write a song to that  (Writing Quotes) At the time I begin writing a novel, the last thing I want to do is follow a plot outline. To know too much at the start takes the pleasure out of discovering what the book is about  (Writing Quotes) When I began writing, it was a cosmic thing: Inspiration! Wham! Short spurts of time when I felt out of touch with reality, temporarily insane and the result: a song!  (Writing Quotes) Writing a song isn’t that hard. Writing a good song is difficult. Let’s face it, we’re faced with taking a complex feeling or event, making words rhyme and saying exactly what we want them to say in a short amount of time... the primary reason for keeping it short and to the point is to be certain that you’re not boring your audience  (Writing Quotes) What inspires me is anxiety and the quest to try to change things in my life... I got addicted to endings and beginnings and to the idea of always moving around... Obviously, whenever you’re going through something that’s the best time to create, if you’re going through something amazing, or horrible, or nothing at all you should be creating. Unfortunately the songwriters of today generally torture themselves to make sure they’re writing good songs and take it a little too seriously  (Writing Quotes) Songwriters I’ve always been drawn to are people who deal with something of depth in the lyric writing... I’ve always been influenced by the folk song, the storytelling tradition in folk music. And so for years I wrote mostly story songs. I still do that, but as I’ve gone on, it’s gotten a little more personal. I used to write mostly in the third person. I write a little more in the first person now  (Writing Quotes) Kristofferson was writing what was really in his heart and saying it in ways we hadn’t heard up till that point  (Writing Quotes)
