Text Quotes
Writing is a way of living other lives. It is a way of expanding your life. It’s not actually living a different life, it just means that you’re hungry for life. There are so many things you want to do  (Writing Quotes) As I started writing about loss and grief, I was taking what felt unmanageable and using my songwriting, my sense of poetry and discipline, to try and make it manageable  (Writing Quotes) Something good happened to my writing when I stopped being afraid to do something simple, for the fear that people might think I couldn’t do something more complex. Don’t be confused by the word simple. Simple is not easy, it is clear voiced, and fearlessly elegant  (Writing Quotes) A lot of my writing is not terribly civilized. Sometimes I listen to songs by very smart writers who assume that the world is a civil place with certain formalities that people follow, but I don’t see things that way. My own experience tells me that life is not like that. That’s why I write the way I do  (Writing Quotes) Writing code is not production, it’s not always craftsmanship though it can be, it’s design  (Writing Quotes) The situation is not good with the record companies. It’s just not working out, so I don’t plan to record until it’s straightened out. In the meantime I’m happy doing my movies and writing the music for the theme songs, whether I sing them or not  (Writing Quotes) I do not choose my listeners. What I mean is, I never write for my listeners. I think about my audience, but I am not writing for them. I have something to tell them, but the audience must also put a certain effort into it. But I never wrote for an audience and never will write for one, because you have to give the listener something and he has to make an effort in order to understand certain things  (Writing Quotes) The calligraphic letter is not entirely a letter, but something that sits between writing and music  (Writing Quotes) Writing should be like skirts. Long enough to cover what it needs to cover and short enough to maintain interest  (Writing Quotes) Sometimes you don’t know what you’re writing until you’ve finished it  (Writing Quotes) My playing music is strictly for fun. When I was in a band, I was really excited to talk about it since I had never really played music to that extent. It was never meant as something I would consider as anything more than having fun with my friends. But I think I would enjoy writing music for the movies that I’m working on  (Writing Quotes) Good actors never use the script unless it’s amazing writing. All the good actors I’ve worked with, they all say whatever they want to say  (Writing Quotes) I do not hold that because the author did a bad job of writing the player need trump it with the same kind of acting. When I go into a picture I have only one character to look after. If the author didn’t do him justice, I try to add whatever the creator of the part overlooked  (Writing Quotes) What’s great is that starting a blog can get you lot of attention for your writing. But it doesn’t have to be for anybody other than yourself  (Writing Quotes) Writing is a way of life. I do it because it’s a way of experiencing the world, and trying to come to terms with it and understand it and express it and engage with it. And to me it’s a natural extension of reading  (Writing Quotes) I have a journalism degree, but I’d rather be the person who is being written about rather than the person who is writing  (Writing Quotes) When you consider all the writers who never even had a machine. Who would have given an eyeball for a good typewriter. Any typewriter. All the ones who wrote on a matchbook covers. Paper bags. Toilet paper. Who had their writing destroyed by their jailers. Who persisted beyond all odds  (Writing Quotes) The great thing for me, now, is that writing has become more and more interesting. Not just as a craft but as a way into things that are not described. It’s a thing of discovering. That’s when writing is really working. You’re on the trail of something and you don’t quite know what it is  (Writing Quotes) I had taken some of my solo music into the record label. They didn’t really care for the direction I was moving in and I found it really disheartening. They wanted a pop hit, which I understand in terms of making money. I get that. But what they were going to ask of me was something I wasn’t prepared to deliver and I felt kind of trapped. I just stopped writing. I just stopped. It was stifling  (Writing Quotes) I don’t read novels whilst I’m writing one; I just haven’t got a wide enough brain to concentrate on incoming and outgoing in the same time zone  (Writing Quotes) The flow of writing is always a surprise and a challenge. Click the computer on and I am 17 again, wanting to write and not knowing if I can  (Writing Quotes) Playing a flute is like writing a book. You’re telling what’s in your heart... It’s easier to play if it’s right from your heart. You get the tone, and the fingers will follow  (Writing Quotes) Writing a biography is not a love affair. It’s not a marriage. It’s a job, it’s a piece of work  (Writing Quotes) Well, let’s start with the maxim that the best writing is understated, meaning it’s not full of flourishes and semaphores and tap dancing and vocabulary dumps that get in the way of the story you are telling. Once you accept that, what are you left with? You are left with the story you are telling. The story you are telling is only as good as the information in it: things you elicit, or things you observe, that make a narrative come alive; things that support your point not just through assertion, but through example; quotes that don’t just convey information, but also personality  (Writing Quotes) The moment of writing is not an escape... it is only an insistence, through the imagination, upon human ecstasy, and a reminder that such ecstasy remains as much a birthright in this world as misery remains a condition of it  (Writing Quotes) Just as with running, there were days that I didn’t feel like writing; I wrote anyways  (Writing Quotes) Work extra hard on the beginning of your story, so it snares reader’s instantly. And know how you’re going to end your story before you start writing. Without a sense of direction, you can get lost in the middle  (Writing Quotes) When people ask me which I would rather give up, writing or medicine, it’s like being asked which eye I’d prefer to have poked out with a spoon: neither, and please use a fork  (Writing Quotes) The writing process for a short story feels more like field geology, where you keep turning the thing over and over, noting its qualities in detail, hammering at it, putting it near flame, pouring different acids on it, and then finally you figure out what it is, or you just give up and mount it on a ring and have an awkward chunky piece of jewelry that seems weirdly dominating but that you for some reason like. I could be wrong about field geology here  (Writing Quotes) By remaining constrained in one’s environment or country or family, one has little chance of being other than the original prescription. By leaving, one gains a perspective, a distance of both space and time, which is essential for writing about family or home, in any case  (Writing Quotes)
