Text Quotes
I don’t write for an audience. I write for myself. And if I imagine an audience at all, it’s the characters, but I know that I would keep writing even if no one ever published me again, even if no one ever read me again  (Writing Quotes) I believed that if I was to call myself a writer, I should live on writing. If I could not live on it, even simply, I should destroy every scrap, every trace, every notebook and live some other way  (Writing Quotes) I begin by writing paragraphs that don’t have an immediate relation to a plot. The sound of the story comes first  (Writing Quotes) Within a single scene, it seems to be unwise to have access to the inner reflections of more than one character. The reader generally needs a single character as the means of perception, as the character to whom the events are happening, as the character with whom he is to empathize in order to have the events of the writing happen to him  (Writing Quotes) Graffiti is linear and it’s done with a pencil, and it’s like writing on walls. But in my paintings it’s more lyrical  (Writing Quotes) I don’t teach writing. I teach patience. Toughness. Stubbornness. The willingness to fail. I teach the life. The odd thing is most of the things that stop an inexperienced writer are so far from the truth as to be nearly beside the point. When you feel glosbal doubt about your talent, that is your talent. People who have no talent don’t have any doubt  (Writing Quotes) If you go to a big city anywhere in the world and you need a doctor, just ask me. I can tell you who’s good and who’s bad. I’ve even considered writing a guidebook  (Writing Quotes) Writing should be useful. If it can’t instruct people a little bit more about the responsibilities of consciousness there’s no point in doing it  (Writing Quotes) Narrative becomes the way you make sense of chaos. That’s how you focus the world. It’s the only reason you should ever try this writing job  (Writing Quotes) I see no reason to spend your life writing poems unless your goal is to write great poems  (Writing Quotes) A good song should make you wanna tap your foot and get with your girl. A great song should destroy cops and set fire to the suburbs. I’m only interested in writing great songs  (Writing Quotes) The best thing about writing has been the writer’s life, the sense of being expressed, the ownership of the day, the entirely specious sense of freedom we have, however slave we are to some boss or other. I wouldn’t trade it for any other life  (Writing Quotes) The very act of writing assumes, to begin with, that someone cares to hear what you have to say. It assumes that people share, that people can be reached, that people can be touched and even in some cases changed. So many of the things in our world lead us to despair. It seems to me that the final symptom of despair is silence, and that storytelling is one of the sustaining arts; it’s one of the affirming arts. A writer may have a certain pessimism in his outlook, but the very act of being a writer seems to me to be an optimistic act  (Writing Quotes) Time, which is your enemy in almost everything in this life, is your friend in writing  (Writing Quotes) Good writing never soothes or comforts. It is no prescription, neither is it diversionary, although it can and should enchant while it explodes in the reader’s face  (Writing Quotes) I’m not against sentimentality. I think you need it. I mean, I don’t think you get a true picture of people without it in writing... It’s a kind of poetry, it’s an emotional poetry, and, to bring it back to the literary scene, I don’t think anything is true that doesn’t have it, that doesn’t have poetry in it  (Writing Quotes) What do you want from me? Fine writing? Or do you want to see the sales curve stop moving down and start moving up?  (Writing Quotes) You can’t write a song out of thin air you have to feel and know what you are writing about  (Writing Quotes) Writing is work, but it’s also a compulsion, and once you get your characters on paper, you can’t abandon them. You have to respond to them  (Writing Quotes) Producing writing is not so much like filling a basin or pool once, but rather getting water to keep flowing through till finally it runs clear  (Writing Quotes) There have always been jokes all over our songs; I originally started writing lyrics to make my friends crack a smile, which is difficult  (Writing Quotes) Computer literacy is a contact with the activity of computing deep enough to make the computational equivalent of reading and writing fluent and enjoyable. As in all the arts, a romance with the material must be well under way. If we value the lifelong learning of arts and letters as a springboard for personal and societal growth, should any less effort be spent to make computing a part of our lives?  (Writing Quotes) It’s just writing about things, feelings, not that we’re dark or depressed... just as much as anyone else is  (Writing Quotes) I wrote about drugs, and I didn’t think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them. I didn’t want fans to think heroin was cool. But then I’ve had fans come up to me and give me the thumbs up, telling me they’re high. That’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen  (Writing Quotes) Writing is a demanding profession and a selfish one. And because it is selfish and demanding, because it is compulsive and exacting, I didn’t embrace it. I succumbed to it  (Writing Quotes) This is a stamina game, so don’t despair if you run down a blind alley and have to start over, or if you get another rejection letter. Every successful writer has gone through that, but they kept writing and didn’t quit until they made it happen  (Writing Quotes) He took me from not being able to write a word in terms of writing screenplays to being the king of wooden dialogue  (Writing Quotes) You see, writing down your meanderings gets something started deep in the recesses of your brain. That distant part of your mind knows that you want to write stories or poems or plays and not endless jabber, and it will get to work. It may take a while. You may have to write this stuff for hours or days or weeks, but eventually that subterranean part of your brain will come through and begin to send you ideas  (Writing Quotes) The writing is a joy, so seamless you nearly miss the sheer artistry of the style and the terrific, wry humour  (Writing Quotes) I have never separated the writing of poetry from prayer. I have grown up believing it is a vocation, a religious vocation  (Writing Quotes)
