I have to listen to music while I’m working. Music is essential. It’s at the top of the pyramid for me. I’ve always felt disappointed in what I’ve made when I held it up to the music I love. I try not to compare them now  (Yr Quotes) I consider myself a lyricist first and foremost, but if you get something else out of what I do, that’s fine too. I’m not sitting back here telling people how they have to take my stuff. We just want to play music, and hope that people like it  (Yr Quotes) For me, singing was always about the lyrics. I’m hopeless at singing songs that don’t have a core  (Yr Quotes) Sometimes I start just on the piano with a melody or musical idea that kind of leads me to certain lyrics  (Yr Quotes) Fantastic tyrant of the amorous heart. How hard thy yoke, how cruel thy dart. Those escape your anger who refuse your sway, and those are punished most, who most obey  (Yr Quotes) Freedom is not won by merely overthrowing a tyrannical ruler or an oppressive regime. That is usually only the prelude to a new tyranny, a new oppression  (Yr Quotes) How can you consider flower power outdated? The essence of my lyrics is the desire for peace and harmony. That’s all anyone has ever wanted. How could it become outdated?  (Yr Quotes) I have one piece of music, since 1997, and I don’t see it having lyrics. Where does it go in this world? So I haven’t recorded it  (Yr Quotes) One difference between poetry and lyrics is that lyrics sort of fade into the background. They fade on the page and live on the stage when set to music  (Yr Quotes) Perhaps the fact that we have seen millions voting themselves into complete dependence on a tyrant has made our generation understand that to choose one’s government is not necessarily to secure freedom  (Yr Quotes) Today the tyrant rules not by club or fist, but disguised as a market researcher, he shepherds his flocks in the ways of utility and comfort  (Yr Quotes) Some dying men are the most tyrannical; and certainly, since they will shortly trouble us so little for evermore, the poor fellows ought to be indulged  (Yr Quotes) The tyranny of a prince in an oligarchy is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the apathy of a citizen in a democracy  (Yr Quotes) There is no crueler tyranny than that which is perpetuated under the shield of law and in the name of justice  (Yr Quotes) The martyr sacrifices themselves entirely in vain. Or rather not in vain; for they make the selfish more selfish, the lazy more lazy, the narrow narrower  (Yr Quotes) Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty  (Yr Quotes) Lulled in the countless chambers of the brain, our thoughts are linked by many a hidden chain; awake but one, and in, what myriads rise!  (Yr Quotes) The right of a nation to kill a tyrant in case of necessity can no more be doubted than to hang a robber, or kill a flea  (Yr Quotes) If I look at my old lyrics, they seem to be full of rage, but empty. There was an emptiness in my life  (Yr Quotes) The tyrant grinds down his slaves and they don’t turn against him, they crush those beneath them  (Yr Quotes) Whilst shame keeps its watch, virtue is not wholly extinguished in the heart; nor will moderation be utterly exiled from the minds of tyrants  (Yr Quotes) My reason, it’s true, controls my feelings, but whatever its authority, it doesn’t rule them so much as tyrannize them  (Yr Quotes) The video forum for me has been a source of great consternation because once you start projecting a look to a song, it robs the listener of their ability to adopt that song and make the lyric their own  (Yr Quotes) A truer image of the world, I think, is obtained by picturing things as entering into the stream of time from an eternal world outside, than from a view which regards time as the devouring tyrant of all that is  (Yr Quotes) Advocates of capitalism are very apt to appeal to the sacred principles of liberty, which are embodied in one maxim: The fortunate must not be restrained in the exercise of tyranny over the unfortunate  (Yr Quotes) I’m a bit cynical that it ever will be addressed properly. I think it is healthy to get some sort of copyright protection. But some of it has gone on forever  (Yr Quotes) Public opinion, a vulgar, impertinent, anonymous tyrant who deliberately makes life unpleasant for anyone who is not content to the average person  (Yr Quotes) Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day  (Yr Quotes) To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical  (Yr Quotes) Martyrs do not underrate the body, they allow it to be elevated on the cross. In this they are at one with their antagonists  (Yr Quotes)
